Types of White Wine: A Simple Guide
White wine is the most refreshing category in the cellar and the most varied, swinging from zippy and citrusy to creamy and golden. Sort them by style and you will always know what is in the glass before you taste it.
White wine is made without the grape skins that give reds their color and tannin, so whites are defined instead by two things: how crisp or rich they feel, and how dry or sweet they taste. Knowing where a white sits on those two scales tells you almost everything, from how cold to serve it to what to eat with it. Here are the three families that cover nearly every bottle you will meet.
Crisp, light whites
High in acid, low in oak, and built for refreshment. Pinot Grigio is light and clean, the easy aperitif. Sauvignon Blanc is zesty and herbaceous, all citrus and cut grass, magic with goat cheese. Albarino brings saline minerality made for shellfish. These are the whites to drink young, cold, and often.
Aromatic whites
Perfumed and expressive, with flowery, fruity aromas that leap from the glass. Riesling is the most versatile, ranging from bone-dry to sweet and always racy with acidity, the hero of spicy food. Gewurztraminer is exotic, all lychee and rose. Viognier is fuller, with peach and honeysuckle. These wines reward a little attention.
Rich, full whites
Round, weighty, and often touched by oak. Chardonnay is the queen, ranging from crisp and unoaked (Chablis) to buttery and golden, the congruent match for lobster and creamy dishes. White Rhone blends and oak-aged whites bring similar body. These are the whites that drink almost like a red, and they want richer food.

The most popular are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Gewurztraminer, Viognier, and Albarino. They are easiest to understand sorted by style, from crisp and light to rich and full.
What is the most popular white wine?
Chardonnay is the world’s most popular white wine grape, made in styles from crisp and unoaked to rich and buttery. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio are also hugely popular.
What is a good white wine for beginners?
Light, fruit-forward whites like Pinot Grigio and off-dry Riesling are easy starting points, along with unoaked Chardonnay. They are approachable, refreshing, and food-friendly.
Which white wine is the driest?
Crisp whites like Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Albarino are typically bone-dry. Chablis, an unoaked Chardonnay, is another classic dry white. Sweetness varies most in Riesling, which spans dry to dessert-sweet.
What is the difference between oaked and unoaked white wine?
Oak aging adds body and flavors like vanilla, butter, and toast, as in a rich Chardonnay. Unoaked whites, like Pinot Grigio or Chablis, taste leaner, crisper, and more focused on pure fruit and acidity.
