idola makes the kind of wine that gets called weird in the best way. Winemaker Ryker Wall works with organic Central Coast fruit and a minimal intervention hand, chasing Mediterranean grapes and unusual blends, while co-owner Pooja Wall shapes a serene, art filled tasting space. The result is natural wine that feels personal.

Ryker and Pooja Wall

idola wine co. is a small Central Coast project founded in 2023. Winemaker Ryker Wall helms the cellar, and co-owner Pooja Wall oversees the look and feel of the brand, from the labels to the calm, art driven interior design of the tasting space. Together they make organic, natural wines in tiny quantities, around a thousand cases a year.

The philosophy is restraint. With careful organic farming up front, Ryker can do less in the cellar, getting out of the way so the fruit speaks for itself and each vintage honestly captures its place.

Winemaker Ryker Wall calls his Mediterranean inspired bottlings weird and wacky, in the best possible way.

Central Coast fruit, minimal hand

idola sources from scenic, sustainable vineyards across San Luis Obispo County and the wider Central Coast, all farmed organically. The minimal intervention approach means native fermentations and few additions, the better to let the subtleties of each site and season come through.

Ryker leans toward Mediterranean inspired varieties and blends that he cheerfully calls weird and wacky. The Central Coast, with its warm days and cool, ocean influenced nights, is well suited to these heat loving southern grapes, ripening them fully while keeping the wines fresh.

The wines

The lineup is adventurous and ever changing: Mediterranean varietals, skin contact and rose style wines, and unusual blends, all made in small lots in a natural, low intervention style. Expect bright, expressive, characterful wines rather than big, oaky ones, with bottles generally in the thirty to fifty dollar range.

This is a winery for the curious drinker, someone who wants to taste something new and a little unexpected, served in a space designed to slow you down.

What to pour it with

Natural, minimal intervention wines like these love casual, flavorful food. The brighter whites and skin contact wines, with their acidity and texture, are naturals with grilled vegetables, ceviche, fresh salads, and spread out plates of small bites, where a touch of salt makes them taste rounder.

The lighter, juicy reds and rose style wines play like a great Mediterranean table wine, happy with charcuterie, roast chicken, wood fired pizza, and herb roasted vegetables. Keep things relaxed and let the wines breathe, and these expressive bottles will surprise you.
