Lumen Wines

A pioneer who put Santa Barbara Pinot Noir on the map and a self-described grape philosopher farming with chickens. Lumen makes lively, early-picked, regeneratively grown wine from the Santa Maria Valley.

Pull up a stool at the Lumen Lounge on Bell Street in Los Alamos, and the wine in your glass tells you exactly where it is from: the cool, fog-fed northern edge of Santa Barbara County, where the Pacific never lets the afternoon get too warm. Lumen is the project of farmer and winemaker Will Henry and the legendary Lane Tanner, two people who joined forces in 2012 with a single conviction, to make honest, cool-climate wine from the best vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley. The result is Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that taste of place rather than power, made by hands that still work the dirt.

The story

In 2012, Will Henry and Lane Tanner crossed paths in the Santa Maria Valley and quickly realized they wanted the same thing. Both were drawn to cool-climate fruit, low-intervention winemaking, and the idea that a wine should taste like the season it was grown in. They named the new label Lumen, the Latin word for light, and set out to make wines from the coolest, most characterful sites in the county.

Lane Tanner is one of the true pioneers of Santa Barbara wine. A chemist by training, she began her career at Firestone Vineyard in 1981 and launched her own Lane Tanner label in 1989, the first in the Central Coast devoted entirely to Pinot Noir. For years she was a rare woman with her own winery in the county, and her bright, savory, food-friendly Pinots helped build the reputation that Santa Barbara enjoys today. She brought that decades-deep knowledge to Lumen, mentoring Will and shaping the house style. In 2023 she handed the winemaking over to Will Henry and Vic Rodriguez, who now farm and make the wines together.

Will is the engine of the day-to-day, the one in the vineyard checking irrigation lines and walking the rows. The project is genuinely a family affair. Will’s wife, Kali Henry, is the executive chef at Pico, the farm-driven restaurant in Los Alamos where the Lumen tasting room lives, so the wine and the table sit under one roof. In 2024 the team launched a second label, Hey Ginger, an experiment that co-ferments grapes with a small amount of fresh ginger in place of sulfites, the kind of low-intervention curiosity that keeps the work alive.

The place

Lumen is rooted in the Santa Maria Valley, the cool northern corner of Santa Barbara County and one of the finest cool-climate growing regions in California. The valley is shaped like a funnel open to the Pacific, and that shape is its destiny. Marine air and fog pour straight inland off the ocean, settling over the vines through the night and burning off slowly through the morning. The daily swing from foggy and cool to bright and warm and back again gives the valley one of the longest growing seasons in the state. Grapes hang for weeks, ripening slowly while holding onto the acidity that keeps the wines fresh and alive.

Will Henry farms 17 acres in the Solomon Hills, in the western reaches of the valley closest to the sea, where sandy soils and constant marine influence make for delicate, high-toned fruit. Beyond the estate, Lumen sources from a roster of celebrated Santa Maria sites, including the Sierra Madre Vineyard, one of the valley’s coolest and most ocean-influenced plantings and a place Lane Tanner has loved since the 1980s. The fog is the reason these wines taste like somewhere, and that somewhere is unmistakably the Santa Maria Valley.

They named the label Lumen, the Latin word for light, and chased the coolest sites in the county.

What they grow and make

At its heart, Lumen is a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay house, the two great cool-climate grapes, made here with clarity rather than weight. The Pinot Noirs are perfumed and red-fruited, with the savory, earthy undertow and bright acidity that mark fruit grown this close to the ocean. They are wines built for the table, not the trophy shelf. The Chardonnays lean taut and mineral, carrying orchard fruit and a clean line of acid instead of heavy butter and oak.

The range stretches beyond the Burgundian core. Lumen also makes Grenache, Grenache Blanc, and Pinot Gris, all turned toward freshness and food. Single-vineyard bottlings from sites like Sierra Madre show off the character of individual pieces of ground, while the broader Santa Maria and Santa Barbara County wines capture the valley as a whole. Production sits around 2,000 cases a year, small enough that nearly every bottle passes through the same few pairs of hands. The Hey Ginger label adds a playful, experimental edge for drinkers who want something off the beaten path.

Farming

Lumen farms its estate vineyard organically, with certified organic status, and follows regenerative practices aimed at building healthy living soil rather than simply feeding the vines. In the cellar the approach is low intervention, letting the cool-climate fruit and the season speak with as little manipulation as possible. The Hey Ginger project, which replaces added sulfites with fresh ginger during fermentation, is a direct expression of that hands-off philosophy. For Will and the team, good wine starts in the ground and ends with restraint.

Visiting

You will not find Lumen at a sprawling estate winery. The tasting experience is the Lumen Lounge, set inside Pico, the family’s farm-driven restaurant in the small, walkable town of Los Alamos. It is an intimate, wine-first room where you can taste through the lineup with food from Kali Henry’s kitchen never far away. Because tasting hours can shift by season and day, it is worth booking ahead or confirming the current schedule before you go.

Food pairing

These are wines that were made to be eaten with, so pour them with a plate and they come alive. The cool-climate Pinot Noir, all bright red fruit and savory earth, wants the things Burgundy has always wanted, seared duck breast, mushroom risotto, or salmon off the grill. The earthy, savory notes in the wine bridge directly to the umami in mushrooms and the char on the fish, so the two read as a single flavor, a textbook complementary match. The taut, mineral Chardonnay loves roast chicken with lemon, grilled halibut, or a creamy pasta where its acid slices through the richness and resets your palate for the next bite. Reach for the Grenache or Grenache Blanc with grilled vegetables, herb-roasted pork, or anything off a summer fire. Skip the heavily charred, fatty ribeye with these reds, as they are too delicate to stand up to that much fat and smoke and the wine will simply disappear. If you want a tailored match for a specific bottle and a specific dinner, our wine pairing generator will point you to the right plate.
