Its inaugural 2024 release is four wines drawn from a single site, J and K Vineyard in the Ballard Canyon AVA, made with a light hand and a clear philosophy: farm to give back to the land, press gently, and let each wine become itself. Winehounding describes its first release as exactly that, a beginning rooted in place, memory, and the steady work of hands in the field and the cellar. Rather than spread across many vineyards, the label chose to start with one, drawing all four of its inaugural wines from J and K Vineyard in the heart of Ballard Canyon. It is a focused, honest way to launch a winery, letting a single piece of ground introduce the whole project.

The ethos is written into how the wine is made. The fruit is farmed with a commitment to supporting the land rather than taking from it, pressed gently, and guided with minimal intervention so the wines are, in the winery own phrase, allowed to become themselves. This is a label born of community and built, as they put it, for many tables.

Why Ballard Canyon

Ballard Canyon is one of the most distinctive AVAs in Santa Barbara County, a small, warm pocket in the middle of the Santa Ynez Valley that has become California most serious home for Syrah and Rhone varieties. J and K Vineyard sits in the heart of it, defined by coastal influence, limestone-rich soils, and the daily rhythms of the valley.

The canyon runs in a way that channels cool coastal wind down through the vines, so the warm days that ripen these grapes are checked each evening by a marine breeze. That keeps the fruit fresh and structured rather than heavy. The limestone in the soil is the other key. Chalky, well-draining ground like this tends to give wines a mineral spine and bright lift, and Ballard Canyon reputation was built on exactly that combination of warmth, wind, and stone.

The wines

The inaugural release is a set of four wines from the 2024 vintage, each one an expression of J and K Vineyard and the blocks within it, shaped by slope, exposure, vine material, and canopy. Because Winehounding farms and makes the wine with minimal intervention, the goal is transparency: to show what this specific Ballard Canyon site does when it is gently handled rather than pushed.

For now the wines are released in small quantities through a series of private tasting and release events, the kind of intimate, hands-on launch that fits a label this young and this personal. It is a chance to taste a Santa Barbara winery at its very first chapter, before the story is widely known.

What to pour it with

Ballard Canyon is Syrah and Rhone country, and those wines are some of the most food-friendly reds you can put on a table. With a savory, peppered Syrah, reach for the grill: rosemary-crusted lamb or a peppered ribeye is close to perfect, because the wine firm tannins bind to the fat and protein, softening the wine and lightening the meat, while the cracked pepper on the steak echoes the pepper in the glass. That is a congruent and a structural pairing at once.
