A Tribute to Grace

A New Zealand winemaker fell in love with one grape, Grenache, and named her cult-favorite wines for the grandmother who taught her grace.

Most wineries make a little of everything. Angela Osborne makes essentially one thing, Grenache, and she makes it with such devotion that her tiny label has become one of the most quietly adored names in California wine.

One grape, one tribute

Angela Osborne came from New Zealand with an unusual fixation: a belief that Grenache, a grape most California wineries treat as a blending component, could make ethereal, perfumed, soulful wine all on its own. She founded A Tribute to Grace in 2007 and named it for her grandmother Grace, whose spirit she wanted the wines to carry. The flagship fruit comes from the remote, high-elevation Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, planted far up in the Cuyama badlands at over three thousand feet, where cold nights and intense sun give the Grenache both lift and depth. The wines are pale, fragrant, and almost weightless, the opposite of heavy, and critics and sommeliers have championed them for years.

One grape, made with total devotion, named for the woman who taught her grace.

The wines

A Tribute to Grace is Grenache through and through, made in an ethereal, light-handed style: high-toned red fruit, rose petal, and spice, with a silky texture and bright acidity rather than power. There are single-vineyard bottlings and a rose, each a different expression of the same singular obsession. These are wines that change minds about what Grenache can be.

What to drink it with

Because it is so light and aromatic, this Grenache plays more like a Pinot Noir than a big red. Pour it with seared duck, roast chicken, grilled salmon, or a mushroom dish, where its perfume and gentle structure flatter the food without overwhelming it. Lightly chilled on a warm day, it is one of the most versatile reds you can put on a table, and the rose is a charcuterie-and-sunshine wine through and through.

Find your pairing
What is A Tribute to Grace known for?
Ethereal, single-variety Grenache. Founded in 2007 by New Zealand winemaker Angela Osborne, the cult label specializes almost entirely in Grenache, much of it from the high-elevation Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, in a light, perfumed, age-worthy style.
Where does the name come from?
It is named for the winemaker’s grandmother, Grace, whose spirit Angela Osborne wanted the wines to honor.
Where can I buy A Tribute to Grace?
The wines are made in small quantities and sold largely direct, so the winery’s own site is the best place to find current releases.
What food pairs with these Grenache wines?
Because the style is so light and aromatic, it pairs like Pinot Noir: with duck, roast chicken, salmon, or mushrooms. Lightly chilled, it is wonderfully versatile, and the rose is made for charcuterie.
