Tony and Jo Ann Truchard purchased a run-down 400-acre ranch in the Carneros in 1974 and have farmed it ever since without outside investment, corporate ownership, or a change of hands. The estate is one of the largest family-owned properties in the Carneros AVA and produces an unusually broad range of varieties from the cool climate, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Roussanne.

History of Truchard Vineyards

Tony and Jo Ann Truchard, a physician and his wife, purchased the 400-acre Old Sonoma Road property in 1974 as a personal project without a specific winemaking plan. They planted the first vineyard blocks in the late 1970s and began selling fruit to neighboring wineries before launching the Truchard Vineyards label in 1989.

The estate became known among winemakers throughout Napa and Sonoma as one of the finest Carneros sources for multiple varieties. The Truchard fruit appears in wines from many of the valley’s most celebrated producers without attribution, giving the family a reputation in the trade that extends well beyond their own label’s distribution. The second generation of Truchards now works on the property alongside the founders.

The Truchards bought a 400-acre former cattle and grain ranch in the Carneros in 1974 when the land was cheap and the wine industry was still sorting out what the cool southern Napa Valley could produce. Fifty years later they farm the same land, make their own wines, and sell the majority of their fruit to some of the most respected labels in California, which is why collectors who know Carneros know the Truchard name even if they have never bought a Truchard bottle.

Carneros terroir and Truchard farming

The 400-acre Truchard property sits in the Carneros hills on the Napa side of the county border, with vineyard blocks at multiple elevations and aspects across the rolling terrain. The shallow clay soils over clay subsoil that characterize Carneros naturally limit vigor and yields, and the combination of bay fog, persistent afternoon winds, and the slow-draining soils creates growing conditions unlike anywhere else in the Napa Valley.

The diversity of blocks across the 400 acres allows the Truchards to match varieties to microclimates: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the coolest, most fog-influenced blocks; Syrah and Roussanne in slightly warmer positions; Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the warmest sites at the property’s eastern edge where the Carneros climate warms slightly toward the Napa Valley floor.

The wines of Truchard Vineyards

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the cool Carneros terroir are the varieties that established Truchard’s critical reputation. The Chardonnay is fermented in French oak with full malolactic fermentation and shows the weight and minerality that Carneros clay soils produce. The Pinot Noir is consistently one of the most precise and site-expressive in the Carneros AVA.

Syrah is the variety that surprises most visitors: Carneros Syrah from the Truchard estate shows the cool-climate precision of French Northern Rhone Syrah rather than the warm-climate richness of Australian or Central Coast Syrah. The Roussanne white is an unusual variety for California and draws consistent attention for its textural complexity. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from the warmer eastern blocks round out the program.

Food pairings with Truchard wines

Truchard Chardonnay, with its Carneros clay-derived minerality and full malolactic fermentation texture, is a versatile food white that suits preparations where weight and mineral complexity are assets: Dungeness crab with lemon aioli, roasted chicken in cream and tarragon, or a lobster bisque where the wine’s texture mirrors the richness of the broth.

The Carneros Pinot Noir suits the lighter-touch preparations where its precision and red fruit character can take center stage: roasted duck breast, grilled salmon with pinot reduction, or rabbit braised with mustard and herbs. The Syrah, with its cool-climate restraint, works beautifully with lamb preparations: grilled lamb chops, lamb merguez, or a slow-braised lamb shoulder with olives and tomatoes.
