Trefethen Family Vineyards farms one of the most historic estates in Napa Valley: a property anchored by an 1886 winery building designed by Hamden McIntyre, the same architect who designed Inglenook and Far Niente. The cool Oak Knoll District terroir, influenced by morning fog and afternoon bay breezes, produces Chardonnay, Riesling, and structured Cabernet from some of the longest-established vineyards on the valley floor.
History of Trefethen Family Vineyards
The property was first developed as a winery by Eschol Winery in 1886, with the landmark three-story wooden building designed by Hamden McIntyre to allow gravity-flow winemaking. McIntyre was the most sought-after winery architect in California at the time, also designing the original buildings at Inglenook and Far Niente in the same decade.
Gene and Katie Trefethen purchased the estate in 1968 when Napa Valley was still a mostly agricultural region rather than a wine destination. They restored the historic building and began replanting the vineyards, establishing the estate that their children and grandchildren operate today. The family achieved landmark status for the 1886 building, which survived the 2014 South Napa earthquake with repairable damage and was fully restored.

When Gene and Katie Trefethen purchased the estate in 1968 the building had not been used as a winery in decades. They restored it and created the gravity-flow cellar that still operates today.

Start the quizOak Knoll District terroir
The Oak Knoll District is the southernmost of Napa Valley’s major sub-appellations on the valley floor, stretching from just south of Yountville toward the city of Napa. It is also the coolest, catching morning fog from San Pablo Bay that burns off later than in the northern valley and experiencing afternoon breezes that pull up from the bay through the gap between the Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges.
The cool temperatures and extended growing season make Oak Knoll well-suited for aromatic whites and for Cabernet Sauvignon with natural freshness and acidity. Trefethen farms primarily on deep alluvial loam and gravelly soils deposited by the Napa River over centuries, soils that drain well and produce fruit with concentration and balance rather than overripe weight.
The wines of Trefethen Family Vineyards
Chardonnay is the variety that has defined Trefethen’s reputation. The estate Chardonnay is fermented in French oak with partial malolactic fermentation, producing a wine with both richness and the bright acidity that the cool Oak Knoll District terroir delivers. It consistently stands out in a Napa Valley market dominated by bigger, richer Chardonnay styles.
Riesling from Trefethen is an anomaly in Napa Valley and one of the most interesting wines the estate produces: a dry to off-dry white with the floral aromatics and mineral precision the variety achieves in cool climates. The Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate reflects the Oak Knoll District’s cooler character with more herbal and graphite notes alongside the expected dark fruit and structured tannins.

Trefethen Chardonnay, with its weight and bright acidity, is one of Napa Valley’s most food-versatile whites. Dungeness crab with drawn butter, grilled halibut with herb beurre blanc, roasted chicken with cream sauce, or a lobster bisque all match the wine’s texture and complement its apple and citrus character without overwhelming the fruit.
The Riesling is the most food-flexible wine in the lineup: it works from appetizers through fish courses and even into moderately spiced preparations where its residual sweetness and acidity cool the heat. The estate Cabernet suits classic preparations: rack of lamb, duck confit, or a roasted beef tenderloin that matches the wine’s cooler, more herbal character rather than the richer, jammier Napa Cabs from warmer northern sites.
