Stolpman Vineyards

On a rare limestone hill in Ballard Canyon, Stolpman grows some of California’s finest Syrah and Roussanne, dry-farmed by a crew that shares in the wine they make.

Drive the back roads between Los Olivos and Solvang and you climb into Ballard Canyon, a warm, hidden fold of the Santa Ynez Valley where the soil turns to limestone. This is Syrah country, the best of it in California, and Stolpman is the name that proved it.

A lawyer, a limestone hill, and a crew

More than thirty years ago, founding partner Tom Stolpman, a Long Beach attorney, went looking for the right dirt and found a rare limestone outcropping in the hills of Santa Barbara’s coast, open to the Pacific wind and, he believed, naturally suited to the Rhone grapes Syrah and Roussanne. He was right. Today his son Pete Stolpman runs the estate, farmed organically and, increasingly, dry-farmed, with no irrigation, forcing the vines deep and concentrating the fruit. In the cellar the approach is just as honest: native fermentations and minimal manipulation, letting Ballard Canyon speak.

What sets Stolpman apart goes beyond the wine. The estate built its reputation on La Cuadrilla, a full-time, year-round vineyard crew given steady employment and a stake in the work, a model of farmworker dignity rare in California agriculture. The winery even bottles a wine named for them. In 2013, Ballard Canyon earned its own AVA, and Stolpman stands as its flagship.

Great Syrah is not made in the cellar. It is grown on a limestone hill by people who stay.

The wines

Stolpman is, first and foremost, a Syrah house, from structured, age-worthy hillside bottlings to deep, savory estate wines, all carrying Ballard Canyon’s signature of black pepper, dark fruit, and energy. The Roussanne is one of California’s best, rich and aromatic. And the estate has a playful side too, led by Love You Bunches, a juicy, chillable carbonic Sangiovese made to be poured cold and drunk young.

The estate goes back to 1988, when Tom Stolpman, a Los Angeles lawyer, went looking for limestone. He had fallen for wines like Ridge Monte Bello and Calera and worked out that what they shared was limestone soil, so he hunted for it in Santa Barbara County and found a rare outcropping in Ballard Canyon. He and his wife Marilyn bought the land in 1990 with Rhone varieties in mind. Their son Pete took over in 2009 and pushed the estate toward the dry-farmed, own-rooted style it is known for today.

Almost everything here is unusual for California. The best vines are own-rooted rather than grafted, planted at high density, and dry-farmed, so once established they pull what they need straight from the limestone without irrigation. The result is Syrah with real tension and savor, the bottling that more or less defines the Syrah-focused Ballard Canyon AVA, alongside excellent Roussanne and a playful side of carbonic reds. A full-time, year-round vineyard crew, unusual in an industry built on seasonal labor, is part of the identity too.

What to drink it with

The estate Syrah is built for fire and fat: Santa Maria style tri-tip, grilled lamb, or braised short ribs, where the wine’s pepper and dark fruit lock into the char and its tannin softens against the meat. The Roussanne, full and low in acidity, wants roast chicken, pork loin, or even lobster, richness meeting richness. And pour the chilled Love You Bunches with pizza, charcuterie, or a picnic, where its bright, juicy fruit asks nothing of you but a sunny afternoon.
