Sonoma Valley, the Valley of the Moon, is the historic birthplace of the commercial wine industry in California, where Agoston Haraszthy founded Buena Vista in 1857. Sheltered between the Mayacamas and Sonoma mountains, this warm, diverse valley grows everything from Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel to Chardonnay, anchored by some of the oldest names in the state.

Why Sonoma Valley is special

History runs deep here. This is where California winemaking went commercial, and several founding wineries still operate. The valley is warm and protected, but cool bay air slips in from the south near Carneros, giving a wide range of styles. Volcanic and alluvial soils add complexity across its hillsides and floor.

What grows best

Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel thrive on the warm slopes, while Chardonnay and cooler-climate varieties do well in the southern, bay-influenced end. The wines balance ripe California generosity with a sense of history.
