Piedrasassi
The personal Syrah project of one of Santa Barbara’s most respected winemakers, devoted to the cool-climate, old-world side of a grape most of California makes big.
Piedrasassi is what a great winemaker makes when he gets to please only himself. It is the personal label of Sashi Moorman, the hand behind the acclaimed Sandhi and Domaine de la Cote, and it exists for one reason: his love of cool-climate, savory, old-world Syrah.
Syrah, the northern way
While much of California treats Syrah as a big, ripe, sun-soaked red, Piedrasassi looks instead to the Northern Rhone, where Syrah is peppery, floral, structured, and savory rather than sweet. Moorman sources from cool Santa Barbara and Central Coast sites and works with whole clusters and a light hand, chasing freshness and spice over power. These are wines for people who think Syrah has been misunderstood, and want to taste the proof.

Piedrasassi centers on cool-climate Syrah, from approachable everyday bottlings to serious single-vineyard wines, all carrying that telltale crackle of black pepper, dark fruit, and dried flowers. The style is restrained and food-driven, built to age and to sit at the table rather than dominate it.
What to drink it with
This savory, peppery Syrah is built for the grill and for game. Pour it with Santa Maria tri-tip, grilled lamb, or braised short ribs, where the wine’s pepper and dark fruit lock into the smoke and char, or with duck and roasted root vegetables, where its earthy, floral side shines. It is a far more versatile food wine than bigger Syrah, because freshness, not weight, is the point.
