Paradigm Winery on Dwyer Road is the kind of Napa Valley story that gets harder to find every year: a family that planted their own vineyard in the 1970s, farmed it for years before making commercial wine under their own label, and has resisted every opportunity to scale up or sell out since. Ren and Marilyn Harris purchased the 50-acre property in 1976 and spent years understanding what the Oakville soil could produce before they started making wine they were proud enough to sell. The result is a small-lot, estate-only operation that produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Franc from fruit that has been growing on the same ground for nearly five decades, developing the vine age and root depth that produce genuinely complex wine.
50 Years on the Same Oakville Ground
Ren Harris came to Napa Valley in the 1970s, when the benchland real estate that now sells for millions per acre was still within reach of a working family. He and Marilyn purchased the Dwyer Road property in 1976 and planted it over the following years to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Franc, with the mix reflecting both what the market wanted and what the soil seemed best suited for. For years, the Harrises sold their fruit to other wineries before deciding to produce their own label. The transition from grower to winemaker was gradual, but by the time Paradigm produced its first commercial wines, the oldest vines were already developing the character that comes only with age: smaller yields, more concentrated flavors, and the natural balance that eliminates the need for excessive intervention in the winery.
Paradigm is a reminder of what independent Napa Valley farming looked like before the land values made it nearly impossible, and the wines taste like it.

The Paradigm estate sits in the Oakville AVA on Dwyer Road, a quiet lane parallel to Highway 29 in the heart of the benchlands. Oakville soils on this stretch are predominantly Bale series loam with good drainage over clay and gravel subsoil, producing the naturally low-vigor vine conditions that favor concentration over yield. The estate is in a warm but not extreme zone, with good afternoon heat and the cooling air drainage that Oakville allows from the Mayacamas foothills to the west. The combination of soil, climate, and now nearly fifty years of vine age makes the Paradigm estate one of the quietly significant pieces of Oakville farming history.
The Wine Portfolio: Four Varieties, One Estate
Paradigm produces four estate wines in small quantities: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship, showing classic Oakville depth and structure with dark cherry and cassis fruit, cedar and tobacco notes from French oak aging, and firm tannins that soften with five or more years of cellaring. The Merlot is built in a more approachable early-drinking style with plum and chocolate character. The Zinfandel, from some of the oldest vines on the property, shows dried cherry and pepper with a structural complexity that distinguishes it from most California Zin. The Cabernet Franc is the smallest-production wine, showing floral aromatics and mid-palate texture that set it apart from the Cab.

Paradigm Cabernet Sauvignon, with its Oakville benchland concentration and firm tannin structure, pairs naturally with the full range of red meat preparations. A dry-aged ribeye, a braised short rib with red wine reduction, or a rack of lamb with rosemary and Dijon are all strong matches. The old vine Zinfandel, with its dried cherry, pepper, and earthy complexity, is a good companion for smoked and spiced meats, braised pork, and charcuterie boards built around hard salami and aged cheese. The Cabernet Franc pairs well with lighter red meat preparations, duck confit, and mushroom-driven dishes where its floral aromatic character can contribute to the flavor without overwhelming the food.
