Mumm Napa is the California sparkling wine project of G.H. Mumm, the historic Champagne house. Established in 1979 on the Silverado Trail in Rutherford, the winery produces traditional method sparkling wine from Carneros and Napa Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The terrace at Mumm Napa, with its views across the vineyards toward the Mayacamas Mountains, is one of the most scenic outdoor tasting settings in the valley.
History of Mumm Napa
G.H. Mumm established Mumm Napa in 1979, part of a wave of French and European wine producers who recognized the potential for serious sparkling wine in the cool California appellations during the late 1970s. Seagram Corporation partnered with Mumm in the venture, providing the American distribution infrastructure that the Champagne house lacked.
The Silverado Trail location in Rutherford gave Mumm Napa a prominent position on the main wine touring route through Napa Valley, while the fruit sourcing from Carneros and cooler Napa sites provided the climate characteristics needed for quality sparkling wine production. The winery was subsequently acquired by the current ownership structure that includes Allied Domecq and later Pernod Ricard as part of the G.H. Mumm brand management.
G.H. Mumm sent their winemaker Guy Devaux to California in the late 1970s to find land where the climate could support serious traditional method sparkling wine. He found Carneros and the cooler parts of Napa Valley and established the winery on the Silverado Trail in Rutherford, giving Mumm Napa a home base in the heart of the valley while drawing fruit from the bay-cooled south.

Mumm Napa sources Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Carneros vineyards at the south end of Napa Valley, where the bay fog and persistent afternoon winds create the long, cool ripening season that sparkling wine grapes need. The slow ripening preserves natural acidity while developing the delicate fruit flavors and phenolic complexity that make compelling base wine for traditional method production.
Additional sources from cooler Napa Valley sites contribute variety and complexity to the multi-vintage blends. The winemaking team maintains reserves of base wine from multiple vintages to blend into the non-vintage cuvees, following the Champagne model of consistency across years rather than vintage-to-vintage variation.
The wines of Mumm Napa
The Brut Prestige is the flagship and highest-volume wine, a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blend in the classic style: fresh, clean, with strawberry and citrus fruit and the fine persistent bubbles that traditional method production produces. It is the wine that defines the house style and drives the visitor experience.
The DVX is the prestige cuvee, named for Guy Devaux, the founding winemaker who scouted California for the Mumm project. DVX is produced only in top vintages and aged four or more years on lees before disgorgement, producing a sparkling wine of greater complexity and aging potential than the non-vintage cuvees. A Brut Rose and a Blanc de Noirs round out the sparkling lineup.

Mumm Napa Brut Prestige is one of the most versatile food wines produced in California. Its bubbles, acidity, and clean fruit character make it work across the full range of a meal: fresh oysters and raw shellfish as an aperitif, grilled salmon or roasted chicken as a main course companion, or a simple cheese board where the wine’s freshness cleanses the palate between bites.
The DVX prestige cuvee, with its additional age and complexity, suits more deliberate pairings: butter-poached lobster or Dungeness crab with lemon aioli, seared scallops with beurre blanc, or a composed first course of smoked salmon with creme fraiche and caviar where the wine’s toasty, aged character adds a third dimension. The Brut Rose is ideal with charcuterie boards, strawberry preparations, and grilled salmon where its pink fruit character mirrors the food.
