Koehler Wine Estate
A family-run estate on Foxen Canyon Road, more than 27 years deep, where the team has stayed for decades and the lawn comes with picnics, kids, dogs, and resident emus. Koehler makes honest, organically grown wines and one of the easiest welcomes in the valley.
Koehler Wine Estate is the kind of place the Santa Ynez Valley is built on: a family-owned, 40-acre property on Foxen Canyon Road where the same people have farmed the same vines for decades. For more than 27 years the Koehler family has made small-batch, organically grown wines and shared them in one of the most relaxed, family-friendly settings in Santa Barbara wine country. Bring a picnic, bring the kids, meet the emus, and stay a while.
A family, a single property, decades of care
For over 27 years the Koehler family has poured its heart into this 40-acre estate, managing the farming themselves with sustainable practices and crafting organically grown, small-batch wines. The vines are tended by one of the most experienced viticultural teams in the valley, many of whom have been here for decades, and that continuity shows in both the fruit and the warm, family feel of the place.
Derek Koehler, born and raised on the estate, now represents the next generation. He grew up in the vineyard and the cellar, and today works as sales manager and assistant winemaker alongside winemaker Trace Brueske, bringing a sustainability-first mindset to every vintage. You will often find him guiding tastings himself, which tells you most of what you need to know about how this place operates.

Koehler farms in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley along the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, and the estate puts that ground to work across an unusually broad lineup. There is barrel-worthy Chardonnay, a single-vineyard Grenache, a crisp Gruner Veltliner, and a bright, food-friendly Sangiovese, alongside the Rhone and other varieties the estate grows.
The quality is real and recognized, with multiple bottlings earning scores in the mid-90s from critics like James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast. But the wines never feel fussy. They are honest, well-made, and meant to be enjoyed, which is exactly the spirit Koehler was built on.
The easiest welcome in the valley
Where some wineries chase exclusivity, Koehler leans the other way. The tasting room is open daily, walk-ins are welcome, and the spacious lawn is made for spreading out with a picnic, a glass or a bottle, and good company. Families are welcome, leashed dogs are welcome, and the resident emus are a favorite with kids and grownups alike.
Longtime host Dan Zurliene, who has been with the winery more than two decades, is famous for remembering everyone by name. That mix of serious farming and unpretentious hospitality is the whole Koehler personality: come as you are, settle in, and let the afternoon stretch out.
The Koehler family bought the property in 1997, but the vineyard is older than that. Decades earlier it belonged to one of television’s most successful producers, who expanded the plantings to the rolling acreage you see today. That long head start shows in the range. On a single Foxen Canyon estate Koehler grows an unusually wide spread, from Rhone grapes like Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc to Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, along with Riesling, Chardonnay, and Sangiovese. Few valley estates pour from so many of their own rows.
What to pour it with
Koehler range gives you a wine for every part of a picnic. The Gruner Veltliner and other crisp whites are brilliant with hard-to-pair foods like asparagus, salads, and herby dishes, their acidity cutting through and lifting the plate. The Chardonnay steps up to richer fare, roast chicken, crab, and anything in butter.
The single-vineyard Grenache, all bright red fruit and gentle spice, loves grilled lamb, pork, and sausages, while the Sangiovese is built for tomato, olive oil, and grilled meat, exactly the Italian table it comes from. Spread a blanket on the lawn, salt the food well to round the wines, and let the estate do the rest.
Pack a picnic and stay a while
Koehler is the easygoing heart of the Foxen Canyon trail: open daily, family and dog friendly, with honest wines and a lawn made for lingering. Just show up and settle in.
