Hartford Family Winery
Family-owned and family-run, Hartford Family Winery sits in the heart of the Russian River Valley near Forestville, producing small-lot single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Old Vine Zinfandel with a high-risk, high-reward approach to viticulture.
Hartford Family Winery was built on a clear philosophy: the best wines come only from truly exceptional vineyards. Located on Martinelli Road in Forestville in the Russian River Valley, the winery produces small-lot, single-vineyard wines that express the character of specific sites rather than a house style — earning consistent acclaim for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that rivals the best in California.
Family roots and a single-vineyard focus
Hartford Family Winery is a family-owned operation nestled along Martinelli Road in Forestville, one of the most productive corridors for premium Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley. The winery was founded with a commitment to single-vineyard wines, a philosophy that requires finding the right plots, building long-term relationships with growers, and letting the fruit speak without interference from winemaking technique.
The family also operates a second tasting room in downtown Healdsburg, offering visitors a choice of venues: the estate experience on Martinelli Road surrounded by vines, or the urban tasting room in Healdsburg just off the central plaza. Both pour the full range of Hartford wines, from the lightest Chardonnay to the most structured old-vine Zinfandel.
Hartford sources from some of the most demanding vineyard sites in the Russian River Valley, old-vine blocks where low yields and cool temperatures produce wines of rare concentration and intensity.

The Russian River Valley AVA earns its reputation through one reliable mechanism: the marine fog that pours inland through the Petaluma Gap each morning, cooling the valley floor and delaying ripening compared to warmer parts of Sonoma County. This slow season allows grape sugars to rise gradually while acids remain bright and aromas develop fully, producing wines with complexity and structure that warmer climates cannot replicate.
Forestville sits in one of the coolest parts of the AVA, close to where the Russian River bends south toward Guerneville and the Pacific influence is most direct. Soils shift between the Goldridge sandy loam that defines much of the valley floor and denser clay-loam on slopes and benchland. Single-vineyard wines from this corridor carry a distinctive tension between fruit and structure.
The wines: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and old-vine Zinfandel
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the core of the Hartford portfolio, each produced as single-vineyard designates that express specific sites from the Russian River Valley and beyond. The Pinot Noirs range from village-level approachable bottles to serious single-block wines built to age. The Chardonnays show the cool-climate signature of the region: stone fruit and citrus acidity rather than tropical richness.
The Old Vine Zinfandel is a Hartford hallmark and a reminder that the Russian River Valley has a farming history stretching back long before Pinot Noir made the region famous. These low-yielding old blocks produce Zinfandel with concentration and spice that is distinctly Sonoma in character. Hartford also produces sparkling wines under the Hartford label.

Russian River Valley Pinot Noir from Hartford pairs beautifully with the kind of food that needs a wine with real acidity and earthy depth: duck breast with cherry reduction, wild mushroom risotto, roasted salmon, lamb with herbs, or a charcuterie board built around aged cheeses and cured meats. Pinot Noir tannins are moderate and fine-grained; they grip protein without overwhelming delicate textures, and the acidity refreshes the palate between bites.
Hartford Chardonnay is the natural match for roast chicken in cream sauce, grilled halibut, scallops, or lobster bisque. The Old Vine Zinfandel calls for bold partners: braised short ribs, lamb shoulder, BBQ beef brisket, or sharp aged cheddar. High fruit concentration and ripe tannins in the Zinfandel balance the richness of slow-cooked or smoked proteins.
