Gary Farrell spent two decades as one of Sonoma County’s most respected winemakers, at Davis Bynum and then under his own label beginning in 1982, before selling the brand in 2004. The label passed through two ownership groups before Vincraft Group acquired it in 2012 and completed a dramatic renovation of the hillside winery and tasting room on upper Westside Road. Today winemaker Theresa Heredia continues the tradition of sourcing from the Russian River Valley’s finest grower estates: Rochioli, Allen Vineyard, Hallberg Ranch, Olivet Lane, and Bien Nacido.
Single-Vineyard Program and Key Grower Partnerships
The core of the Gary Farrell lineup is its single-vineyard designate program, giving wine lovers a direct comparison of how terroir varies across the Russian River Valley’s most celebrated parcels. Rochioli Vineyard Chardonnay is rich and textural, while Hallberg Ranch Pinot Noir is darker and earthier. Allen Vineyard Pinot Noir delivers the most classically Burgundian profile in the lineup: perfumed, structured, and long. Olivet Lane Estate, one of the oldest Pinot Noir plantings in the Russian River Valley, contributes complexity and depth from old vines planted in the 1970s.
From its hillside perch above the Russian River Valley, Gary Farrell has spent four decades translating iconic vineyard sites into wines of Burgundian finesse.

Start the quizThe Hillside Winery and Tasting Room
The Gary Farrell winery sits well above the valley floor on the upper stretch of Westside Road, offering panoramic views across the vineyards toward the Santa Rosa Plain. The tasting room was fully rebuilt after the 2012 acquisition into a modern, light-filled space that takes full advantage of its elevated position. Seated tastings on the terrace, with views stretching toward the Mayacamas Mountains, rank among the most scenic wine experiences in Sonoma County. Both introductory flights and reserve seated experiences are available.
Winemaking Style: Restraint and Terroir Transparency
Theresa Heredia brings a classically restrained approach to winemaking at Gary Farrell. Whole-cluster inclusion is used selectively based on vintage and variety, new oak percentages stay below 40 percent for most wines, and wines are aged 10 to 15 months depending on structure. Cold soaks of three to five days extract color and aroma without harsh tannin. The Chardonnay program emphasizes mineral tension and restrained richness over the butter-and-oak style more common in warmer California appellations.

Alongside the single-vineyard lineup, Gary Farrell produces Russian River Valley appellation-level Pinot Noir and Chardonnay drawing from multiple grower partners. These wines offer an accessible entry into the program: elegant, food-friendly, and well-priced relative to the prestige of the single-vineyard bottles. A Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir extends the portfolio into cooler, ocean-influenced growing territory north and west of Healdsburg, adding further range to the lineup.
