History of Freemark Abbey
The property that is now Freemark Abbey was first planted to grapes in 1886 by Josephine Tychson, one of the first women to build and operate a winery in California. The estate changed hands multiple times before the current partnership of seven investors, including Chuck Carpy and Brad Webb, relaunched it as Freemark Abbey in 1967.
The name has nothing to do with monks or an abbey: it combines the names of three early owners, Freemark, Freeman, and Abbey. The stone building on Highway 29, originally built as the winery in the late 19th century, became one of the most recognized landmarks on the Napa Valley floor. The winery was acquired by Jackson Family Wines in 2006 and continues to operate under the Freemark Abbey name with the same single-vineyard focus.
The Bosche Vineyard in Rutherford has been a named single-vineyard Cabernet source for Freemark Abbey since 1970, making it one of the longest continuously bottled single-vineyard Cabernets in California. Half a century of consistent fruit from the same benchland site is a record almost no other Napa winery can match.

The Bosche Vineyard, a benchland site in the heart of Rutherford, has been the source of Freemark Abbey’s most acclaimed Cabernet since 1970. The vineyard sits on classic Rutherford benchland: well-drained gravelly loam over cobbles and clay, the terroir that produces the dusty tannins and dark fruit concentration known as Rutherford Dust. The 2020 acquisition of the Bosche Vineyard by Jackson Family Wines secured the source for the long term.
Sycamore Knoll is a smaller single-vineyard Cabernet from a Rutherford site with similar benchland character. Together the two single-vineyard wines anchor the premium tier of the Freemark Abbey program and represent the most direct expression of Rutherford terroir in the portfolio.
The wines of Freemark Abbey
Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship at every tier. The Bosche single-vineyard Cabernet is the crown, produced from the historic Rutherford vineyard and aged in French oak for 18 to 20 months. It is built for aging and consistently one of the most underrated Cabs in the valley given its history and vineyard pedigree.
The estate Cabernet Sauvignon is the entry point, blending Napa Valley fruit into an approachable, reasonably priced wine that drinks well on release. Chardonnay has been part of the Freemark Abbey program since the early days and includes both an estate tier and a Carpy Ranch single-vineyard bottling. Merlot and a red blend round out the lineup.

Bosche Cabernet, with its Rutherford Dust tannins and concentrated dark fruit, is built for the lamb and beef preparations that have defined Napa Valley food culture.
