Franciscan Estate was founded in 1972 on the Rutherford benchlands and has built a four-decade reputation for producing Cabernet Sauvignon and the Magnificat Meritage blend at a scale and a price that makes serious Napa Cab accessible without sacrificing quality. The estate sits on Galleron Road just off Highway 29, with tasting rooms that welcome thousands of visitors each year and a vineyard portfolio anchored in the Rutherford Bench, where centuries of alluvial deposits and exceptional drainage produce Cabernet of particular depth and complexity. Franciscan is now owned by Constellation Brands, one of the world’s largest wine companies, but continues to operate as a distinct Rutherford estate.
Rutherford Roots and the Birth of Magnificat
Franciscan was established in 1972 near the southern edge of Rutherford by a partnership that included Agustin Huneeus, later one of the most influential figures in California wine. The estate changed hands several times in its early years before finding stability under Nestlé and then Constellation Brands, but the vineyard identity anchored in Rutherford has remained consistent. Magnificat, the estate’s Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, was introduced in the 1980s as one of California’s first formal Meritage wines, predating the term that eventually became the industry standard for Bordeaux-style blends. The wine has been produced every vintage since.
Magnificat was among the first California Meritage blends when it was introduced, and it remains Franciscan’s most compelling case for what Rutherford Bench Bordeaux blends can achieve.

The Franciscan estate centers on the Rutherford Bench, the gentle west-facing slope of alluvial fan deposits that rises from the valley floor between Oakville and St. Helena. The bench soils are deep, well-drained, and rich in the calcium and mineral deposits left by centuries of stream runoff from the Mayacamas Mountains to the west. The area is warm without the extreme heat of the valley floor, and the afternoon breeze that comes down from the hills moderates the temperature enough to preserve acidity and complexity in the Cabernet. What old-timers call “Rutherford dust,” a combination of soil type and micro-climate, shows up in the wines as a particular texture and earthiness that distinguishes Rutherford Cab from other Napa appellations.
The Wine Portfolio
Franciscan Estate produces a full range of Napa Valley wines anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon. The flagship Magnificat Meritage is the most distinctive wine, blending all five Bordeaux red varieties with a proportional emphasis that shifts with each vintage. The estate Cabernet Sauvignon is produced in larger quantities and designed for approachable drinking within a few years of release, while the single-vineyard Quintessence Cabernet represents the estate’s top tier of single-site expression. The portfolio also includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Merlot for white and lighter-style drinkers.

Franciscan Cabernet and Magnificat pair naturally with the full range of red meat preparations that Rutherford Bench Cabernet was made for. The estate Cabernet, with its approachable structure and dark fruit character, works well alongside grilled ribeye, roasted lamb, and hearty braised dishes. Magnificat, with the additional complexity of the Meritage blend, is particularly suited to preparations where you want a wine that moves with the food: beef tenderloin with mushroom demi-glace, braised short ribs, or a cheese board anchored by aged Parmigiano-Reggiano and aged Gruyere, where the wine’s earthy Rutherford character finds its complement.
