Flowers Vineyard and Winery occupies one of the most dramatic wine sites in California, a ridge 1,800 feet above the Pacific Ocean on the far western edge of the Sonoma Coast. Walt and Joan Flowers planted here in 1991 when this terrain was considered too wild for serious viticulture. Three decades later, the wines made from these vines rank among the finest cool-climate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays produced anywhere in North America.

A Site Built for Extreme Wine

The Flowers estate sits within the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, an area so cool and fog-drenched that ripening grapes here was considered impossible for much of California wine history. Seaview Ridge drops steeply to the Pacific, and summer afternoons bring salt air and marine fog rolling off the water before noon. These conditions slow ripening dramatically, producing grapes with vivid natural acidity and intensity of flavor that warmer inland sites cannot replicate.

Walt Flowers, a real estate developer, and Joan Flowers, his wife, purchased the land in the late 1980s and began planting in 1991. They worked with consulting winemakers and viticulture experts to identify which blocks of their rugged terrain could produce world-class fruit. The answer was that almost all of it could, given the right rootstocks and clonal selections for cold, windy conditions.

The Wines

Flowers makes wine almost exclusively from estate fruit. The flagship Pinot Noirs from Camp Meeting Ridge, Sea View Ridge, and the estate vineyard express the site with unusual clarity. Expect red cherry, dried herbs, iron minerality, and a structure that makes the wines age for a decade or longer. The Chardonnays carry the same coastal tension: bright citrus and white peach with a saline thread that speaks directly to proximity to the ocean.

The winery produces a range of wines from single blocks within the estate, as well as a more approachable Sonoma Coast tier that sources from nearby growers. The estate wines are allocated through a mailing list. The Sonoma Coast wines are more widely available through fine wine retailers and the tasting room.

Visiting Flowers

The Flowers tasting room is located in Healdsburg, in the heart of Sonoma wine country, rather than at the remote ridge estate. This is a practical accommodation given the steep and limited-access roads to the vineyard itself. The Healdsburg space offers seated tastings and a selection of current and library wines. Reservations are required and spaces are limited, so advance booking is strongly recommended.

For those who want the full experience, Flowers periodically offers vineyard tours by appointment to the Ridge estate itself. These tours require a minimum group size and advance coordination with the winery. The drive to the ridge offers views of the Pacific coastline and the rugged terrain that gives these wines their character.

Where is Flowers Vineyard located?
Flowers Vineyard and Winery has two addresses. The estate vineyard sits at 28500 Seaview Road, Cazadero on a ridge 1,800 feet above the Pacific. The public tasting room is located in downtown Healdsburg at 31 North Street, which is the recommended destination for visitors.
What grapes does Flowers grow?
Flowers focuses almost entirely on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both of which thrive in the cool, fog-drenched conditions of the Sonoma Coast. The estate vineyards are planted to French Burgundy clones selected for the cold, windy conditions of the Fort Ross-Seaview area.
How do I get on the Flowers mailing list?
Flowers offers allocation wine through a mailing list. You can join the list through the winery website. Demand significantly exceeds supply for the top estate bottlings, so time on the list before receiving an offer is common.
What is the difference between Flowers Sonoma Coast and estate wines?
The Sonoma Coast tier blends fruit from multiple vineyards across the Sonoma Coast AVA. The estate wines, designated by specific block names such as Camp Meeting Ridge or Sea View Ridge, come entirely from the Flowers estate and represent single-site expressions of the home vineyard.
Is the Flowers vineyard estate open to the public?
The remote estate vineyard on Seaview Ridge is not open for casual visits due to its difficult access. Flowers periodically offers vineyard tours by appointment for small groups. The Healdsburg tasting room is the standard visitor experience.
What makes the Sonoma Coast AVA different from other Sonoma regions?
The Sonoma Coast AVA spans the western portion of Sonoma County closest to the Pacific Ocean. It is significantly cooler and windier than interior regions like Alexander Valley or Dry Creek Valley. The marine influence stretches the growing season, building natural acidity and flavor complexity in slow-ripening grapes.
Does Flowers offer wine club membership?
Flowers offers a wine club for those who want regular access to their wines beyond what is available through standard retail channels. Members receive shipments of current releases and have priority access to library and limited wines at events.
