Duckhorn Vineyards built its reputation on Merlot at a time when the variety was largely ignored in Napa Valley, launching in 1976 with a three-vineyard bottling that became the benchmark for California Merlot. The St. Helena estate on Lodi Lane remains the anchor of a portfolio that has expanded to multiple brands and wine regions while the original Napa Merlot program keeps its founding character.

History of Duckhorn Vineyards

Dan and Margaret Duckhorn founded the winery in 1976 with a focus on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, choosing Lodi Lane in St. Helena for its proximity to some of the valley’s best established vineyards. The first Duckhorn Merlot, the 1978 vintage, sourced from three vineyards including Three Palms in Calistoga and set the template for what became the signature wine.

Three Palms Vineyard, on the Silverado Trail near the Napa River, became the most celebrated single-vineyard source in the Duckhorn portfolio. The winery acquired the vineyard outright in 2015, securing long-term control of the fruit that had defined its flagship for nearly four decades. Duckhorn went public in 2021 and was subsequently acquired by Butterfly Equity, but the winemaking philosophy and vineyard relationships established in 1976 remain in place.

In 1976, Dan and Margaret Duckhorn bet on Merlot when almost no one in Napa Valley was taking the variety seriously. They sourced from three distinct vineyards to build complexity and launched a wine that helped create the category of premium California Merlot from scratch.

Vineyards and Merlot sources

Duckhorn Vineyards sources Merlot from a network of established Napa Valley vineyards selected for site character and consistent quality. Three Palms Vineyard in Calistoga, now estate-owned, is the most famous: a benchland site on the Silverado Trail with volcanic and alluvial soils that produce Merlot with unusual concentration and aging potential.

The Rector Creek Vineyard in Yountville and the Marlee’s Vineyard in St. Helena complete the historical three-vineyard sourcing that defined the early program. Today the winery also sources from additional estate and long-term contract vineyards across the valley. The combination gives the Napa Valley Merlot a complexity of terroir expression that single-vineyard wines cannot replicate.

The wines of Duckhorn Vineyards

The Three Palms Vineyard Merlot is the crown jewel: a single-vineyard wine from the estate that is consistently one of the most celebrated Merlots produced anywhere in California. It ages 18 to 20 months in French oak and is built for the cellar, with dark plum and black cherry fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a mineral finish that reflects the volcanic Calistoga soils.

The Napa Valley Merlot is the approachable entry point, blending fruit from multiple vineyards and offering immediate pleasure while retaining the structure to develop over five to ten years. Duckhorn also produces Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, plus a line of Decoy wines at a lower price point.

Food pairings with Duckhorn Merlot

Duckhorn Merlot is one of the most food-friendly wines produced in California. The variety’s natural plushness and dark fruit character work across a wide range of preparations where Cabernet Sauvignon might overpower. Roasted duck breast with cherry reduction is the classic combination: the wine’s fruit mirrors the sauce, the acidity cuts the richness of the duck fat, and the tannins match the protein without overwhelming it.

Braised short ribs, lamb shank with white beans, mushroom risotto with truffle oil, or a simple burger from quality beef all work beautifully with the Napa Valley Merlot. The Three Palms single-vineyard tier wants more serious treatment: prime rib, rack of lamb, or dry-aged beef that can match the wine’s concentration and aging potential.
