Darioush Winery opened to the public in 2004 after founder Darioush Khaledi spent years perfecting both the wine and the estate it would call home. Khaledi, who came to the United States from Iran in the 1970s and built a successful grocery business in Southern California, dreamed of creating a Napa winery that expressed both his adopted homeland and his Persian heritage. The result is one of the most architecturally distinctive estates in the valley: a reception hall flanked by massive khaki-colored columns modeled on the ancient Persian palace at Persepolis, set among formal gardens on the Silverado Trail south of the Oak Knoll District. Inside, the wines lean heavily toward Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, with the same attention to detail that defines the building itself.
A Vision Rooted in Two Cultures
Darioush Khaledi arrived in the United States as a college student and built a food distribution empire across Southern California, culminating in Glazer’s Inc., one of the largest grocery chains in the American West. He began buying Napa Valley real estate in the 1990s with a plan to eventually make wine that married his Persian sense of hospitality and beauty with the finest fruit Napa had to offer. He hired Stephane Vivier, a French-trained consulting winemaker, and planted vineyards in the Oak Knoll and Coombsville areas south of the city of Napa, where cooler temperatures moderate the ripening of Cabernet and Shiraz and preserve natural acidity. The winery building, designed by Ardeshir Nozari, was completed in 2004 and quickly became one of the most photographed in Napa Valley.
The Persepolis-inspired columns at the entrance announce that Darioush is not like any other Napa winery, and the wines inside live up to that ambition.

The Darioush estate sits in the Oak Knoll District, a Napa AVA designation that covers a cooler zone south of the main Napa Valley floor where Pacific air funneled through the Carneros gap lowers average temperatures during the growing season. The cooler conditions slow ripening and extend hang time, giving Cabernet Sauvignon additional time to develop complexity without losing freshness. The Darioush estate vineyards are planted on well-drained loam and alluvial soils at low elevation, with good east and west sun exposure throughout the day. The winery also sources fruit from other Napa appellations for specific bottlings, but the estate character of the Oak Knoll district defines the house style: generous fruit with bright acidity and firm but smooth tannins.
The Wine Portfolio: Cabernet, Shiraz, and More
Darioush produces Signature Cabernet Sauvignon as the flagship, a wine built on estate and Napa appellation fruit that shows dark cherry, cedar, and spice and is built for medium-term aging. The Signature Shiraz is the most unusual wine in the portfolio, an American Shiraz in the Southern Rhone and Australian tradition with rich plum and pepper character, a rarity among Napa producers focused almost exclusively on Bordeaux varieties. The Darius II is the estate’s ultra-premium Cabernet, produced from the best blocks and vintages and aged longer in French oak before release. The winery also produces Viognier and Chardonnay for white wine drinkers. All wines are presented with the Persian aesthetic of generosity and abundance: full in fruit, smooth in texture, and accessible on release.

Darioush has always emphasized the table as central to the wine experience, a reflection of the Persian tradition of welcoming guests with food and drink together rather than treating wine as a separate intellectual exercise. The Signature Cabernet is ideal alongside braised lamb, one of the great flavors of Persian cuisine, where the meat’s richness complements the wine’s dark fruit and earthy tannins. A slow-cooked lamb shank with saffron rice and dried fruit finds an easy partner in the structured Cab. The Shiraz pairs well with grilled lamb kebab, spiced beef, or a hearty lamb stew seasoned with warm spices like cumin, coriander, and dried lemon. The Viognier is a natural match for Persian rice dishes with herbs and fish.
