Dalla Valle Vineyards

A small Oakville estate on the Silverado Trail where the late Gustav Dalla Valle and his wife Naoko created Maya, one of California’s most admired Cabernet Franc-Cabernet Sauvignon blends.

MayaSmall ProductionEstate OnlySince 1983

Gustav Dalla Valle, an Italian diving equipment entrepreneur, purchased a small hillside property on the Silverado Trail in Oakville in 1983 and planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc among the rocks and red volcanic soil above the valley floor. His flagship wine, named Maya after his daughter, blends the two Bordeaux varieties in proportions that shift with each vintage, and has become one of the most sought-after small-production Cabernets in Napa Valley. Gustav died in 1995, and his Japanese-born wife Naoko took over the estate, continuing to work with winemaker Heidi Barrett in the early years before developing her own team. The estate produces only a few thousand cases annually and remains entirely estate-grown.

From Diving Gear to Napa Vines

Gustav Dalla Valle made his money in underwater breathing equipment, building a global business before turning his attention to Napa Valley in the early 1980s. He was drawn to a rough hillside parcel on the Silverado Trail near the southern end of Oakville, a site that most buyers would have passed over for its rocky, iron-rich volcanic soil. Gustav saw the same thing the best Bordeaux growers see in poor, well-drained ground: vines that struggle produce more concentrated, expressive fruit than vines that have it easy. He planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and hired a series of talented winemakers to craft the wine. Gustav died in 1995, before Maya had reached full recognition, and Naoko stepped in to run the estate with a combination of precision and artistry that the wine world has celebrated since.

Maya has earned a place among the most revered small-production Cabernets in California, built on a hillside plot that Gustav Dalla Valle chose for its rocks rather than in spite of them.

The Estate, the Soil, and What Makes Oakville Special

The Dalla Valle estate sits on the eastern side of Oakville, just above the Silverado Trail on a gentle hillside with red volcanic and alluvial clay-loam soils rich in iron. The drainage is excellent and the soils are naturally low in vigor, pushing the vines to concentrate what little moisture and nutrition they find into intense, small-berried fruit. The location captures good sun exposure without the extreme heat of the western Oakville benchlands, producing Cabernet with both depth and freshness. The estate is small by Napa standards, only around 25 planted acres, and every bottle of Maya is made from fruit grown on the property.

Maya and the Wines of Dalla Valle

Maya is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that has varied over the years from roughly 50-50 to more Cab-dominant blends depending on what the vintage delivers. The Cabernet Franc component gives Maya its signature mid-palate texture and floral aromatic lift, distinguishing it from straight Napa Cabs that lean entirely on Sauvignon for structure. The estate also produces Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon, which uses fruit from the same estate blocks and is built for earlier drinking than the more structured Maya. Both wines are aged in French oak and produced in tiny quantities, with Maya sometimes totaling fewer than 1,000 cases in a given year.

Food and Table Pairings

Maya’s combination of Cabernet Sauvignon structure and Cabernet Franc aromatic complexity makes it one of the most versatile great Napa Cabs at the table. The Franc component adds notes of dried violet, green bell pepper at low levels, and an earthy savory quality that pairs especially well with herbed preparations: rack of lamb with rosemary and Dijon, roasted duck with cherry and thyme, or veal tenderloin with sage butter. The wine’s tannin frame is firm but not heavy, allowing it to complement lighter preparations than a typical powerful Oakville Cabernet. An aged Maya with a decade or more of bottle time is exceptional alongside hard aged cheeses, where the wine’s evolved earthy and leather notes meet their match.

Dalla Valle Vineyards: Frequently Asked Questions

What is Maya wine and what makes it special?
Maya is the flagship wine of Dalla Valle Vineyards, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grown on the estate’s hillside Oakville property. Named after Gustav Dalla Valle’s daughter, Maya is produced in tiny quantities from estate fruit only, and the Cabernet Franc component gives it a distinctive floral complexity and mid-palate texture that sets it apart from most Napa Cabernets. It is consistently rated among the finest small-production California Cabs.
Who owns Dalla Valle Vineyards?
Dalla Valle Vineyards was founded by Gustav Dalla Valle, an Italian entrepreneur, who purchased the Silverado Trail property in 1983. Gustav died in 1995, and his Japanese-born wife Naoko has run the estate since, continuing to develop both the vineyard and the winemaking program that has made Maya one of the most sought-after small-production Napa wines.
How much Maya wine is produced each year?
Dalla Valle produces very small quantities of Maya, sometimes fewer than 1,000 cases in a year, depending on the vintage and how the estate blocks perform. The estate is entirely estate-grown, so production cannot be increased by purchasing additional fruit. Maya is sold primarily through a mailing list allocation system.
What grape varieties are in Maya?
Maya is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grown on the Dalla Valle estate in Oakville. The proportions vary by vintage but typically range from roughly 50 percent Franc to more Sauvignon-dominant blends, depending on which variety performed best in the growing season. The Franc component gives Maya its characteristic floral lift and mid-palate complexity.
Where is Dalla Valle Vineyards located?
Dalla Valle Vineyards is located at 7776 Silverado Trail in the Oakville AVA of Napa Valley. The estate sits on a hillside just above the Silverado Trail, with red volcanic and iron-rich clay-loam soils that produce naturally concentrated, low-yielding fruit.
Is Dalla Valle open to visitors?
Dalla Valle Vineyards is open by appointment only. Production is very small and the estate is not a high-volume tasting destination. Visitors who are able to arrange appointments typically taste with a member of the Dalla Valle team in an intimate setting on the Oakville property.
How does Maya compare to other Oakville Cabernets?
Maya differs from most Oakville Cabernets in its significant Cabernet Franc component, which adds a floral, savory, and herbal dimension that pure Cabernet Sauvignon blends lack. The wine is also made in much smaller quantities than most Oakville estates, which keeps it among the most allocated and sought-after. The hillside volcanic soils of the Dalla Valle estate also produce a slightly more structured and mineral wine than the benchland-grown Oakville Cabs that many competitors use.
