Coquelicot is the French word for the wild red poppy that blankets the fields of Provence and Flanders, a small, bright symbol of land left to grow as it should. The name fits. This Santa Ynez Valley estate is certified organic, farmed with the conviction that healthy soil makes honest wine.

Organic, on purpose

Coquelicot is a certified organic estate in the Santa Ynez Valley, committed to farming without synthetic chemicals and to letting the land express itself. That choice is the heart of the place: the vineyards are tended the old-world way, and the wines that result are clean, generous, and true to their warm valley home. It is a quietly serious operation hiding behind a charming, poppy-red name.

The wines

Coquelicot works the grapes that the warm Santa Ynez Valley ripens best: Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, the crisp white Sauvignon Blanc, and Rhone grapes including Syrah. Organically farmed and made with a gentle hand, the wines are rich and food-friendly, with a real sense of place.

What to drink it with

The Bordeaux reds want lamb or a fatty steak, where the tannin binds to the fat and both come out rounder, while the Syrah is a natural with Santa Maria tri-tip and the smoke of the grill. The Sauvignon Blanc, bright and herbal, is a classic with fresh goat cheese, the wine and the cheese meeting on the same green, grassy note.
