Porter Creek Vineyards sits at 8735 Westside Road in Healdsburg, on land that George R. Davis purchased in 1978 — five years before the Russian River Valley even received AVA recognition. The estate has Pinot Noir vines planted in 1973, making some of them among the oldest in the appellation. Today winemaker Alex Davis, who grew up on the property and trained in Burgundy under some of the region’s most respected names, makes estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a commitment to organic farming and minimal intervention that dates back over two decades.

George Davis, the early years, and a bet on Pinot Noir

In 1978, when George R. Davis purchased the Porter Creek property on Westside Road, the Russian River Valley was not yet a recognized appellation and Pinot Noir was a commercially dubious proposition in California. The estate had young Pinot Noir vines already in the ground, some of which are still producing today. Davis improved the existing vineyards, planted additional acreage, and in 1982 converted one of the old barns on the property into a bonded winery.

The following year, in 1983, the Russian River Valley became a recognized American Viticultural Area. Porter Creek was among a handful of operations that had staked their livelihood on Pinot Noir in the region before it had any official recognition. George was a self-taught winemaker who studied every book he could find on winemaking technique and Burgundian philosophy, rented part of his winery to other local winemakers to learn alongside them, and eventually encouraged his son Alex to pursue formal winemaking training in France.

Original wines of great purity.

Alex Davis: Burgundy-trained and rooted in Westside Road

Alex Davis grew up rolling barrels and driving tractors on the family property, and won first place in the California statewide FFA grapevine-pruning contest as a student. After studying at Santa Rosa Junior College and Fresno State, he connected with Michel Feuillat of the Universite de Bourgogne and secured a harvest position with Christophe Roumier — considered by many to be one of the finest winemakers in Burgundy. That experience was followed by a full year of viticulture and enology study at the Universite de Bourgogne in Dijon, a second Burgundy harvest with the Michelot-Mestre family in Meursault, a harvest at Domaine E. Guigal in the northern Rhone, and a fourth harvest in South Africa.

Alex returned to Porter Creek full time in 1997. In his first year he converted all fermentations to native yeast. Shortly after, he began the transition to biodynamic farming, and by 2003 the estate vineyards were certified organic — well ahead of the wider industry trend toward organic viticulture in California.

Estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay farmed without compromise

Porter Creek produces estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from vines that range from recently planted to over 50 years old. The oldest Pinot Noir parcel dates to 1973. Those old vines produce fruit with concentration and complexity that younger plantings rarely match — lower yields, smaller berries, and root systems deep enough to pull trace minerals from the soil regardless of the season.

The winemaking approach is minimal: native yeast fermentations, careful cellar work, and decisions made vineyard by vineyard and year by year rather than from a fixed formula. Alex took that lesson directly from his time with Christophe Roumier in Burgundy, where he observed a willingness to adapt the approach when academic training might otherwise constrain a wine’s development.

Pairing Porter Creek wines with food

Estate Pinot Noir from old vines in a cool, fog-driven appellation brings everything to the table that makes Pinot Noir the most food-friendly red grape in California. The acidity cuts through fat, the structure is light enough not to overpower delicate proteins, and the earthy, mineral character that comes from deep-rooted old vines echoes the savory notes in food rather than competing with them. Mushroom dishes, roasted salmon, duck with cherry sauce, and herb-roasted lamb all work exceptionally well.

Russian River Valley Chardonnay from estate fruit has the same cool-climate precision: bright acidity and stone fruit without the heaviness that can come from warmer growing conditions or heavy oak treatment. Match it with grilled fish, roasted chicken, or risotto with spring vegetables, where the freshness of the wine sharpens each bite rather than flattening it under weight.
