J. Rochioli Vineyard and Winery
The Rochioli family has farmed Westside Road in Healdsburg since 1938. When Tom Rochioli started the winery in 1982, the blocks his father planted became the benchmarks that defined what Russian River Valley Pinot Noir could taste like.
Few addresses in California wine matter as much as 6192 Westside Road in Healdsburg. The Rochioli family has farmed this site since 1938, and the vineyards they planted became training ground and benchmark for some of the greatest winemakers ever to work in the Russian River Valley. When Wine Spectator gave a Williams Selyem Pinot Noir a perfect 100 in 1994, it was made from Rochioli fruit.
Three generations on Westside Road
Joe Rochioli Sr. planted the first vines on what is now the Rochioli estate in 1938, initially growing grapes to sell to other wineries. His son Tom recognized the exceptional quality of the site and established J. Rochioli Vineyards and Winery in 1982, bottling wine under the family name for the first time. The Rochioli estate became famous not just for its own labels but for the growers who sourced from these blocks — Gary Farrell and Williams Selyem both built their reputations on Rochioli fruit.
The winery remains family owned and operated today. Wine is sold through an allocation list, and access is limited. The same blocks that made the winery famous in the 1980s are still farmed the same way, by the same family.
A Williams Selyem Pinot Noir made from Rochioli fruit earned the first perfect 100 a California Pinot Noir ever received from Wine Spectator.

Start the quizWhat Westside Road produces
Westside Road runs along the benchland west of the Russian River, catching the marine air that funnels in from the coast each morning. Soils shift from Goldridge sandy loam on the flats to denser clay-loam on the benches and slopes. The combination produces Pinot Noir with deep color, layered aromatics, and a structure that rewards aging.
The Rochioli estate is one of several legendary Westside Road properties — Dehlinger, Gary Farrell, and Williams Selyem all sit within a short distance — but the Rochioli blocks are among the most studied and celebrated. The cool days, warm afternoons, and cold nights that define this corridor allow slow, complete ripening that builds complexity without sacrificing freshness.
The wines: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc
J. Rochioli produces single-vineyard Pinot Noir from multiple blocks on the estate, including the celebrated West Block and Little Hill. These are vineyard-designate wines in the truest sense: each bottle is a portrait of a specific piece of ground on Westside Road. Chardonnay from the estate shows the same precision, with cool-climate acidity and depth that holds the wine together over years.
Sauvignon Blanc is one of the Rochioli surprises: a textured, complex wine that goes well beyond the crisp, herbaceous style common in California. The fruit comes from the estate and the wine is made with the same care as the Pinot Noir. All wines are available only through the winery mailing list.

Rochioli Pinot Noir demands food with real flavor. The wine has the structure to stand up to duck confit, braised short rib of pork, game birds, or wild mushroom preparations. The tannins in Russian River Pinot Noir are moderate but present: they grip protein and lift the savory elements of a dish without overwhelming delicate textures. Shared earthy compounds between Pinot Noir and mushrooms make that pairing especially harmonious.
The Chardonnay pairs beautifully with lobster bisque, grilled halibut, or roasted chicken with herbs. The Sauvignon Blanc is outstanding with oysters, goat cheese tarts, or light vegetable preparations from the garden.
