J. Daniel CuveeBlueprint CabInglenook LegacySince 1995

Robin Lail carries one of the most resonant names in Napa Valley wine history. Her grandfather Gustave Niebaum built Inglenook in 1879, and her father John Daniel Jr. ran it through its golden era before selling in 1964. Robin spent years working to reclaim that legacy, co-founding Dominus Estate with Christian Moueix in 1982 before leaving to establish Lail Vineyards in 1995 with the goal of creating wines that honored her family’s history without living in its shadow. The J. Daniel Cuvee, named for her father, and Blueprint, the entry-level Cabernet, are both produced from Rutherford and Napa Valley sources, and both reflect the understated elegance that defined the Inglenook wines Robin grew up tasting.

A Dynasty Continued on Its Own Terms

Robin Lail’s family connection to Napa Valley wine runs deeper than almost anyone else in the valley. Gustave Niebaum, her grandfather, founded Inglenook in 1879 and built it into one of the first internationally recognized California wine estates. Her father John Daniel Jr. ran Inglenook through what many consider its finest period before selling the estate in 1964, a decision that haunted him until his death. Robin Lail spent years working within others’ structures before founding Lail Vineyards in 1995, and the wines she makes there carry a sense of responsibility to that history without being paralyzed by it. The J. Daniel Cuvee is produced from the best sources in Rutherford and built in a style that honors the classic Napa Cabernet tradition without trying to replicate the past.

Robin Lail produces the J. Daniel Cuvee as a tribute to her father and a reminder of what Rutherford Cabernet looked like at its peak before the era of modern Napa wine.

Rutherford and the Classic Napa Style

Lail Vineyards sources fruit from Rutherford and other Napa Valley locations, working with the Rutherford benchland character that defines the classical Napa Cabernet style that the Inglenook wines of the mid-20th century helped establish. The Rutherford Bench soils, deep alluvial loam with excellent drainage and mineral richness, produce Cabernet of depth, texture, and the earthy quality that tasters call “Rutherford dust.” Robin Lail’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes restraint and balance rather than extraction and power, producing wines that age gracefully and show their best at the table rather than in isolation as a trophy.

The Wine Portfolio: J. Daniel Cuvee and Blueprint

The J. Daniel Cuvee is the flagship, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc named for Robin’s father. It is produced in small quantities from the best available Rutherford and Napa Valley sources and aged in French oak for 20 or more months. The wine is built for aging but shows the elegance and restraint that define the Lail house style on release. Blueprint Cabernet Sauvignon is the second wine, made in a more approachable and earlier-drinking style but still reflecting the careful sourcing and winemaking attention that goes into the flagship. Small-lot white wines including Sauvignon Blanc are also produced in select years.

Food Pairing with Lail Vineyards

The elegant, restrained style of Lail Vineyards Cabernet makes it one of the more food-versatile Napa Cabs at the table. The J. Daniel Cuvee, with its Rutherford depth and classical balance, is excellent alongside preparations that honor the wine’s subtlety: a rack of lamb with herb crust and Dijon, a roasted beef tenderloin with bordelaise sauce, or duck confit with cherry reduction. The wine does not need the most powerful preparations to show well; its elegance can also be appreciated alongside aged hard cheeses and mushroom-driven dishes where the wine’s earthy Rutherford character finds a complementary partner. Blueprint, being more approachable, pairs well across a broader range including grilled lamb, roasted chicken, and pasta with meat sauce.
