Sutter Home Winery carries a place in American wine history that few estates can claim: it is the birthplace of White Zinfandel. Bob Trinchero, who ran the winery with his family after acquiring it in 1947, was experimenting with a darker, more concentrated style of Zinfandel in 1975 when a stuck fermentation left him with a barrel of partially fermented pink wine. Rather than dump it, he bottled it and sold it. The slightly sweet, blush-colored wine sold out immediately, and over the following decade White Zinfandel became the best-selling wine style in the United States, introducing millions of Americans to wine for the first time. The Trinchero family turned that success into a major wine business, and Sutter Home remains the flagship label of Trinchero Family Estates, one of the most productive wine companies in California.
The Trinchero Family and the Birth of White Zinfandel
The Thomann family founded the original Sutter Home property in 1874, but it was the Trinchero family, led by Mario Trinchero, who purchased the winery in 1947 and set it on its modern course. Mario’s son Bob Trinchero took over the winemaking and spent the 1960s and early 1970s producing red Zinfandel in an era when the variety was California’s workhorse grape. In 1975, a stuck fermentation in a Zinfandel barrel left sugar unfermented and the wine pink. Bob bottled it anyway. The result, slightly sweet, low in alcohol, and pink in color, was unlike anything widely available in the American wine market. It flew off the shelves. By the mid-1980s, White Zinfandel was the best-selling wine in the United States, and the Trinchero family had built one of the most successful wine businesses in California on the back of a mistake.
White Zinfandel was a happy accident in 1975, but the Trinchero family turned it into a business that introduced millions of Americans to wine.

Sutter Home’s Victorian main house and estate on St. Helena Highway South is one of the most photographed winery properties in Napa Valley, a white-painted 19th-century building surrounded by mature gardens and the original estate vineyards. The estate sits just south of the main St. Helena commercial district, and the tasting room is among the most visitor-friendly in the valley, welcoming large numbers of guests daily without the appointment-required format of smaller boutique wineries. The garden, with its vegetable beds and heritage plantings, has become a destination in its own right.
The Wine Portfolio: Beyond White Zinfandel
While White Zinfandel remains the best-known Sutter Home wine, the portfolio has expanded considerably since 1975. The winery produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Moscato, Pinot Grigio, and a range of sweet and off-dry wines designed for a broad consumer base. The Reserve tier, produced in smaller quantities from better fruit sources, represents a more serious attempt at quality-focused wine within the Sutter Home brand. Trinchero Family Estates, the parent company, also includes higher-end brands including Napa Cellars and Terra d’Oro that operate separately from Sutter Home.

White Zinfandel’s slight sweetness and low tannin make it one of the most food-flexible wines in the Sutter Home lineup. The residual sugar balances spicy preparations, making White Zin an excellent match for Thai curry, Sichuan stir fry, and other spiced dishes where a dry red wine would clash. The wine also pairs well with lighter fare: ham sandwiches, fruit salads, barbecued chicken, and mild seafood dishes where the sweetness provides a pleasant contrast. The Sutter Home Cabernet and Merlot pair with the standard red meat and pasta preparations, while the Moscato is a natural dessert wine companion for fruit tarts, light cakes, and fresh fruit desserts.
