Baldacci Family Vineyards occupies one of the most coveted small parcels in the Stags Leap District, a 17-acre hillside estate on the Silverado Trail that the Baldacci family purchased in 1999 and has farmed with increasing intensity and care ever since. Tom and Brenda Baldacci came to Napa from a background in the hospitality industry, and they brought that same focus on detail and guest experience to both the vineyards and the tasting room they built on the estate. The hillside Cabernet Sauvignon produced from the volcanic loam of the Stags Leap palisades has become one of the better examples of what the district can produce at small scale, with the elegance and fine tannin texture that defines the sub-AVA.
A Family Estate Built on Hospitality
Tom and Brenda Baldacci spent years in the hospitality industry before making the transition to Napa Valley wine production. Their approach to the estate reflects that background: the tasting room they built on the Silverado Trail property is designed for conversation and comfort rather than throughput, and the family remains actively involved in all aspects of the operation. The 17 acres they planted in 1999 are small enough to farm with genuine attention to every row, and the decision to limit production rather than expand the source base has kept quality high and the Stags Leap character consistent across vintages.
The Baldacci Stags Leap estate produces Cabernet of genuine district character from one of the smaller and more carefully farmed hillside sites in the sub-AVA.

Start the quizStags Leap District Hillside Soils
The Baldacci estate sits on the volcanic hillside soils of the Stags Leap District, just east of the Silverado Trail where the terrain begins to rise toward the palisades. The soils here are predominantly volcanic loam and volcanic ash-derived clay, low in fertility and very well drained, forcing vine roots deep and producing naturally small-berried fruit with concentrated flavors. The dramatic volcanic palisades to the east absorb heat during the long summer days and radiate it back toward the vineyard in the evening, extending the effective growing season and moderating the temperature swings that could otherwise cause rapid ripening. This mechanism is central to the Stags Leap identity and is felt clearly in the Baldacci vineyard.
The Wine Portfolio: Cabernet, Pinot Noir, and Small Lots
Baldacci produces three tiers of estate Cabernet Sauvignon from the Silverado Trail hillside, ranging from the approachable Brenda’s Vineyard bottling to the more structured and concentrated Thomas Cabernet, which is produced from the best blocks and built for aging. The Stags Leap District Cabernet, the mid-tier wine, shows classic district character: fine tannins, dark cherry and cassis fruit, and a mineral quality from the volcanic soil that gives the wine its sense of place. Baldacci also produces a Pinot Noir, unusual for the Stags Leap District, sourced from cooler vineyards outside the estate to complement the Cab-focused production.

Stags Leap Cabernet from Baldacci pairs naturally with preparations that complement its elegance rather than compete with it. The fine-grained tannins and dark fruit character of the estate Cab work well with rack of lamb with herbs, duck confit, seared duck breast with cherry reduction, or roasted beef tenderloin with a simple pan sauce. The Thomas Cabernet, with its additional concentration and structure, benefits from richer preparations: braised short ribs, prime rib, or a serious cheese board with aged Comté or Manchego, where the wine’s savory depth and mineral character have enough richness to unfold.
