Provenance Vineyards sources its flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from the Beckstoffer Tokalon Vineyard in Oakville, one of the most celebrated vineyard addresses in Napa Valley history, and produces Rutherford benchland Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc from its own estate. The winery on Highway 29 in Rutherford emphasizes terroir expression and benchland character over heavily extracted or heavily oaked winemaking styles.

History of Provenance Vineyards

Provenance Vineyards was established in 1999 on the Highway 29 corridor in Rutherford, taking advantage of the benchland terroir that defines classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The founding team built the winery around a commitment to terroir-driven winemaking and long-term relationships with the valley’s best vineyard sources.

The relationship with Beckstoffer Tokalon Vineyard in Oakville became the crown jewel of the Provenance sourcing program. Tokalon, one of the most historically significant vineyard addresses in Napa Valley, was developed by early pioneers and has been a source for celebrated Cabernets for more than a century. The Provenance Tokalon Cabernet demonstrates what the vineyard can produce in skilled hands.

The Beckstoffer Tokalon Vineyard in Oakville has supplied fruit for some of the most famous Napa Cabernets ever made. Robert Mondavi planted much of it in the 1960s and 1970s. Getting an allocation as a single-winery source takes either decades of relationships or a willingness to pay significant prices per ton. Provenance has maintained the Tokalon relationship and produces one of the cleaner expressions of what that soil can do.

Beckstoffer Tokalon and Rutherford terroir

The Beckstoffer Tokalon Vineyard in Oakville occupies benchland with deep gravelly loam soils that have been producing Cabernet Sauvignon for more than 150 years. The name Tokalon is Greek for highest beauty and was given to the vineyard by its 19th-century owner H.W. Crabb, who recognized its exceptional quality. Andy Beckstoffer acquired the vineyard from Robert Mondavi Winery and makes the fruit available to a limited number of producers at premium prices.

The Provenance estate vineyards in Rutherford complement the Tokalon source with Rutherford benchland character: the slightly different soil profile and microclimate of Rutherford produces Cabernet with the dusty mineral tannins known as Rutherford Dust, a distinct expression from the Oakville benchland that gives the Provenance program two voices within the Napa Valley terroir family.

The wines of Provenance Vineyards

The Beckstoffer Tokalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is the prestige single-vineyard wine, produced in small quantities from the historic Oakville site and aged in new French oak for 22 months. It is a Cabernet of concentration and precision that reflects the Tokalon soil’s combination of deep drainage and mineral complexity.

The Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon is the estate flagship at higher production volume, demonstrating the benchland character of the Rutherford AVA at an accessible price point. The Sauvignon Blanc from the Rutherford estate is a fresh, aromatic white that shows the variety’s expressive side from benchland soils that contribute texture and mineral precision.

Food pairings with Provenance wines

The Beckstoffer Tokalon Cabernet is built for serious occasions: rack of lamb with Dijon and herbs de Provence, prime rib with au jus and Yorkshire pudding, or dry-aged ribeye from the finest quality beef available. The Tokalon soil produces Cabernet with concentration and length that rewards the richest preparations.

The Rutherford Cabernet is more accessible and works across a wider range: grilled flank steak, braised short ribs, duck leg confit, or a wild mushroom risotto all complement the wine’s benchland character and moderate tannin structure. The Sauvignon Blanc is the natural aperitif and table companion for oysters, grilled fish, goat cheese preparations, and herb-driven salads.
