Bennett Lane Winery sits at the northern tip of Napa Valley near Calistoga, founded in 2000 by Randy and Lisa Lynch with a clear mission: produce a Cabernet-dominant red blend that overdelivers for its price. The MAXIMUS label became the estate’s calling card and earned a devoted national following.
The story of Bennett Lane Winery
Randy and Lisa Lynch established Bennett Lane in 2000 on a property at the far northern end of Napa Valley along Highway 128. The location places the estate at the edge of the Calistoga AVA, where volcanic soils and warm growing days produce intensely ripe, structured Cabernet Sauvignon.
The winery built its reputation on the MAXIMUS red blend, a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wine designed to combine the richness of Calistoga fruit with the structure needed for aging. It became a national restaurant staple and a consistent Wine Spectator top 100 pick, unusual for a wine at its price tier.
The name MAXIMUS was chosen deliberately: maximum flavor, maximum value, maximum Napa Valley character in a bottle that does not require a second mortgage.

Calistoga is the warmest major growing area in Napa Valley, sheltered from Pacific maritime influence by the mountains to the south and west. The volcanic and alluvial soils give wines a distinctive mineral backbone alongside the ripe dark-fruit character the warm climate produces.
Bennett Lane sources its estate and reserve tiers from Calistoga blocks and its MAXIMUS blend from a broader Napa Valley base. The northern location means longer hang time and natural sugar accumulation, which in turn drives the richness and generosity that defines the MAXIMUS style.
The wines of Bennett Lane
MAXIMUS is the flagship red blend: Cabernet Sauvignon dominant with Merlot, Syrah, and sometimes Cab Franc. It is designed for immediate approachability while rewarding short to medium cellaring. Fruit-forward, full-bodied, and smooth.
The Winemaker Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is the estate’s premium tier, sourced from top Calistoga vineyard blocks and given extended aging in French oak. It shows more structure and complexity than MAXIMUS and benefits from five or more years of cellaring. Bennett Lane also produces a white MAXIMUS, a Chardonnay-based white blend designed with the same overdelivering-value philosophy as the flagship red.

The MAXIMUS red is built for the table. Its Cabernet-based structure needs protein and fat to show its best. Burgers, grilled rib-eyes, barbecue brisket, and lamb chops all play to the wine’s richness and soft tannin structure. The approachable tannins mean you do not need to match it with the heaviest preparations: a good roast chicken or mushroom-based pasta works too.
The Winemaker Reserve Cabernet demands more: prime rib, rack of lamb, or braised short ribs are where it delivers. Tannin binds to protein, softening and integrating as you eat, which is why the richest red meats bring out the best in structured Cabernets. White MAXIMUS pairs with roasted chicken, seafood pasta, or mild soft cheeses.
