Cliff Lede Vineyards brings an unexpected sensibility to the Stags Leap District: founder Cliff Lede, a Canadian building materials entrepreneur and serious rock music collector, named each vineyard block after a classic rock album and built the estate around the connection between music, art, and wine. The Poetry Cabernet Sauvignon and Claret red blend are the flagship wines from estate blocks in the heart of the Stags Leap District.
History of Cliff Lede Vineyards
Cliff Lede purchased the Stags Leap District estate in 2002 and began a comprehensive renovation and replanting program that transformed the property over the following decade. Lede, who built a highly successful building materials company in Canada before turning to wine, brought the same discipline and investment philosophy to the vineyard that he had applied to his business career.
The rock music naming system for vineyard blocks was Lede’s own idea, rooted in his genuine collection of rock music memorabilia and his belief that the creative energy of rock and roll and the creative energy of great winemaking share a common spirit. The FEL winery program, based in Anderson Valley, was developed alongside Cliff Lede as a cool-climate companion label.
Every vineyard block at Cliff Lede is named after a classic rock album: Dark Side of the Moon, Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin IV, Exile on Main St. The names appear on the wines, the cellar caves, and the educational materials. It is entirely sincere rather than gimmicky, and the wines are excellent enough that the concept does not need to carry them.

Cliff Lede Vineyards farms estate blocks on both sides of the Yountville Cross Road in the Stags Leap District, with the vineyard blocks named after classic rock albums: Dark Side of the Moon, Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin IV, Exile on Main St., and others. Each block has distinct soil and aspect characteristics that contribute different notes to the Poetry and Claret blends.
The estate sits on the volcanic alluvial soils that define Stags Leap District Cabernet: well-drained sandy loam over volcanic rock and alluvial gravel from the ancient palisade cliffs above. The afternoon shadow from the palisade cliffs on the east side of the valley moderates temperature and extends the growing day without the excessive heat accumulation that can rob Cabernet of its elegance.
The wines of Cliff Lede Vineyards
Poetry is the flagship: a single-estate Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stags Leap District blocks, aged 22 months in French oak. It is a wine of considerable concentration and structure, built for the cellar but approachable on release to collectors who appreciate the Stags Leap silky tannin signature.
Claret is the second wine, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot that adds complexity and accessibility to the lineup. Both wines display the Stags Leap District character: silky tannins, dark cherry and cassis fruit, and the volcanic mineral finish that distinguishes the sub-appellation from warmer Napa Valley sites.

Poetry Cabernet from the Stags Leap District has the estate’s characteristic combination of concentration and silky tannins, which makes it both powerful enough for the most serious food and refined enough not to overwhelm lighter preparations. Rack of lamb with rosemary and Dijon is the natural match: the herb crust mirrors the wine’s aromatic complexity and the lamb fat softens the tannins beautifully.
Dry-aged ribeye with bone marrow butter, roasted duck breast with cherry reduction, or a slow-braised short rib with root vegetables all complement the Poetry’s dark fruit and volcanic mineral finish. The Claret is more accessible and food-versatile: grilled chicken thighs with herbs, mushroom risotto, or a composed charcuterie board all work well with the blend’s slightly softer tannins and more immediate fruit character.
