V. Sattui Winery sells its wine only at the winery and through its wine club, never through retail channels. That direct-only model, combined with a legendary deli and picnic grounds on the Highway 29 corridor in St. Helena, has made V. Sattui the most visited winery in Napa Valley. The wines are made from estate and Napa Valley vineyards and cover the full range from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to late harvest dessert wines.

History of V. Sattui Winery

Dariano Sattui, an Italian immigrant, founded the original Sattui winery in San Francisco in 1885. Prohibition ended the operation in 1920 and the brand went dormant for more than half a century. Dario Sattui, Dariano’s great-grandson, purchased property in St. Helena in 1975 and refounded the winery in 1976, deliberately choosing a direct-only sales model that required no distributors or retail accounts.

The decision to sell exclusively at the winery and through the wine club forced Dario Sattui to create an experience compelling enough to drive repeat visits: the deli and picnic grounds became integral to the model. Today V. Sattui maintains one of the largest wine clubs in Napa Valley and the picnic grounds remain among the most popular destinations on the Highway 29 corridor.

Dariano Sattui founded the winery in San Francisco in 1885. His great-grandson Dario Sattui refounded it in the Napa Valley in 1976, selling wine only direct from the winery. The direct model means every bottle sold is a visit earned, and forty years of consistent hospitality have built a wine club and customer base that sustains the operation without a single retail account.

Vineyards and wine production

V. Sattui farms estate vineyards in St. Helena and Napa Valley and sources from long-term contract growers across the appellation. The production scale is substantial for a direct-only operation: the winery makes dozens of different wines annually to give the wine club and visitors ongoing variety.

Cabernet Sauvignon from multiple Napa Valley sources is the anchor, along with estate and Napa Valley Merlot. The range extends to Zinfandel from old-vine Amador County sources, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and several dessert wines that have developed cult followings among regular visitors. The Madeira-style Muscat and the late harvest Riesling are particularly popular.

The wines of V. Sattui Winery

The Cabernet Sauvignon program ranges from accessible Napa Valley blends to single-vineyard estate wines including the Preston Vineyard Cabernet from a St. Helena hillside site. The Merlot draws from multiple sources and produces a consistently approachable wine with the dark cherry and soft tannin character suited to the variety.

The dessert wine program is a genuine strength: the Black Muscat, a sweet red dessert wine from Black Muscat grapes, has a cult following among visitors who discover it during tastings. The Madeira-style dessert wines and late harvest Riesling round out a sweet wine selection that very few Napa Valley wineries match in breadth or quality relative to price.
