Nickel and Nickel Winery is one of the most distinctive voices in Napa Valley, founded on a single idea: that each great vineyard deserves its own wine. Established in 1997 and operating from a lovingly restored 19th-century farmstead in Oakville, the winery produces up to 20 individual single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons each vintage, alongside single-vineyard Chardonnays that celebrate the same principle of pure place.

One Vineyard at a Time: The Story Behind Nickel and Nickel

Nickel and Nickel was born from discovery. During the phylloxera epidemic of the 1990s, Gil Nickel and his partners at Far Niente began exploring Napa Valley for distinctive vineyard sites that might become something more than source material for a blend. What they found was a collection of individual parcels, each with a character so specific to its soil, elevation, and microclimate that blending them would have erased what made them special. Nickel and Nickel was created to honor those differences.

The restored 19th-century farmstead on Highway 29 in Oakville houses a state-of-the-art winery purpose-built to handle each vineyard separately. Fermentation vessels are sized to match individual lot quantities. Oak aging is calibrated to what each site requires. The result is a portfolio of wines that read like a detailed map of Napa Valley, with each bottle revealing something different about the region geology, climate, and farming.

A Portfolio Built on Place

The core of the Nickel and Nickel lineup is Cabernet Sauvignon from named single-vineyard sites across Napa Valley most prestigious sub-appellations. Each wine is labeled by vineyard name, not by blend designation, so visitors can explore the difference between an Oakville bench site and a Rutherford hillside, or compare Stags Leap District structure with the power of a Howell Mountain block.

The single-vineyard Chardonnays follow the same philosophy, drawn from specific Far Niente estate blocks in the Oakville AVA. These are wines of remarkable specificity: not trying to achieve a house style but trying to capture a single patch of ground in a single growing season. For anyone who loves terroir-driven wine, the Nickel and Nickel lineup is one of the most instructive tastings in Napa Valley.

Pairing Nickel and Nickel Wines with Food

Single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is one of the most food-friendly wines made in California, and the reason is structural. The tannins in Oakville and Rutherford Cabernet bind with protein and fat in meat, softening on the palate and releasing layers of dark fruit, graphite, and earth. Grass-fed beef short ribs, roasted duck breast, or a long-braised lamb shoulder all make excellent partners. Because each Nickel and Nickel vineyard wine has its own tannin structure and fruit profile, matching food to bottle becomes a genuine exploration.

The single-vineyard Chardonnay works beautifully with richer white proteins. The bright acidity cuts through butter-basted halibut or a seared scallop with cauliflower puree, while the stone fruit character in the wine echoes the natural sweetness in shellfish. These are wines that reward pairing intentionally, not as an afterthought.
