Far Niente Winery is one of the most storied estates in Napa Valley, with roots dating to 1885 and a reputation built on precisely crafted Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Nestled in Oakville, the winery name comes from the Italian phrase meaning without care, reflecting the timeless elegance the estate has embodied for over a century. The historic stone building, underground caves, and hillside vineyards create an experience unlike any other in the Napa Valley wine country.
A Historic Oakville Estate, Restored to Its Former Glory
Far Niente was founded in 1885 by Hamden McIntyre, the architect responsible for several other landmark Napa Valley wineries. The estate sat dormant through Prohibition, its stone building weathering decades of neglect until 1979 when Gil and Beth Nickel purchased the property and undertook a painstaking restoration. The work took years and set a new standard for historic preservation in California wine country. By 1982 the winery produced its first post-Prohibition Chardonnay, followed by the Cabernet Sauvignon that would go on to define the estate.
Today Far Niente anchors a family of wineries that also includes Nickel and Nickel, Bella Union, Post and Beam, and EnRoute. The original stone building with hand-hewn masonry and Victorian architecture remains the heart of the property. Underground caves carved into the hillside hold thousands of bottles aging in conditions that have remained constant for over a hundred years. Few estates in Napa Valley can match the depth of history embedded in every corner of this property.

The Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon is the wine that placed the estate on the international stage. It is a blend of fruit from multiple Oakville vineyard blocks, selected each vintage to build a wine of depth, elegance, and remarkable ageability. Dark fruits, velvety texture, and silky tannins have become the defining house style, and the wine consistently earns scores in the mid-to-high 90s from major critics.
The Far Niente Chardonnay is the winery first wine, produced since 1981, and a benchmark for the California style done with French restraint. Juicy citrus and stone fruit combine with a round, creamy mouthfeel and uplifting acidity. The wine is refreshing in youth and develops additional complexity with time in the cellar. The exclusive Cave Collection takes this further still: limited wines aged in the historic caves and re-released in small quantities, available only through the estate.
Pairing Far Niente Wines with Food
The Cabernet Sauvignon calls for food with substance and fat. The tannins in Oakville Cabernet bind with proteins and fat in meat, releasing waves of dark fruit and earthy complexity in the process. Grass-fed beef tenderloin, braised lamb shoulder, or aged hard cheese all work beautifully beside a glass of Far Niente Cabernet. The firm structure that makes the wine cellar-worthy is the same quality that transforms beside great food.
The Chardonnay is a more versatile pairing partner. The French-inspired winemaking gives it weight and texture that stands up to richer dishes: lobster bisque, seared scallops with brown butter, or a roasted chicken with cream sauce. The bright acidity prevents the wine from being overwhelmed by richness, and the fruit character harmonizes with the sweetness in shellfish and stone fruit preparations. This is the kind of Chardonnay that changes the minds of people who think they do not like Chardonnay.
