York Mountain is the smallest and one of the most historic appellations in the Paso Robles area, a high, cool, coast-facing ridge west of Templeton that is technically its own AVA, separate from the larger Paso Robles AVA that surrounds it. It is a place where California wine history runs deep, anchored by a winery that has been making wine since 1882, and where the cool ocean influence produces wines quite unlike the bold reds of the Paso interior.

The oldest winery in Paso country

York Mountain takes its name from Andrew York, who founded a winery here in 1882, making it one of the oldest continuously operating wine estates on the Central Coast. For more than a century it was the historic heart of winemaking in the hills west of Templeton.

The mountain has another famous connection. In the early twentieth century, the Polish pianist and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski bought land nearby and grew Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, having his wine made at the York Mountain Winery. Today the historic winery is owned by Epoch Estate Wines, which has restored the property and continues the long tradition of winemaking on the site.

York Mountain Winery has been making wine since 1882, and once produced the wine of pianist and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski.

Cool, wet, and coast-facing

York Mountain earns its separate AVA status from its distinct climate. Sitting high in the hills only a handful of miles from the Pacific, west of Templeton, it is among the coolest and wettest places in the broader Paso area, catching ocean fog and significantly more rainfall than the inland districts.

The soils are old hillside soils over bedrock, and the elevation and marine exposure keep the growing season cool and long. That makes York Mountain better suited to cool-climate varieties and savory, structured reds than to the big, ripe wines of the Paso interior, a genuine outlier in the region.

Savory, cool-climate wines

The cool, coast-facing conditions here favor wines with freshness and restraint. Pinot Noir and cool-climate Rhone reds like Syrah find a home, alongside the heritage Zinfandel that grew here in Paderewski day, made in a more savory, structured style than warmer Paso fruit.

Because the AVA is tiny and dominated by a single historic estate, the wines are rare and place-specific, expressions of one unusual mountain. For visitors and collectors, York Mountain offers something the rest of Paso cannot: cool-climate character wrapped in more than a century of history.

What to pour it with

York Mountain savory, structured reds are natural food wines. Cool-climate Syrah and Rhone reds love grilled lamb, peppered steak, and sausages, where the wine pepper and dark fruit meet the char while its acidity cuts the fat. Pinot Noir, where it is grown, pairs beautifully with duck, salmon, and mushrooms.

The heritage Zinfandel is a barbecue and roast natural, brambly enough for smoke and spice. Keep the cooking savory and herb-driven to echo the wines, and a pinch of salt on the plate will round them and lift their fruit.

Visiting York Mountain

A historic, scenic detour into the cool hills west of Templeton.

York Mountain sits in the hills west of Templeton along York Mountain Road, off Highway 46 West on the way toward the coast at Cambria. It is a short but winding drive from the heart of Paso, and the cooler, greener, more wooded landscape is a striking contrast to the golden interior.

Because the AVA is tiny and centered on one historic estate, plan it as a special, focused stop, ideally by reservation, and combine it with the nearby west-side districts or a continuing drive to the coast. The sense of history here is a big part of the appeal.
