Denner Vineyards
A retired Ditch Witch dealer turned a Willow Creek barley field into a gravity-flow estate making some of the most acclaimed Rhone wine in Paso.
Ron Denner spent his career selling Ditch Witch trenching machines, the kind of equipment that moves earth for a living. When he retired, he bought a stretch of barley field in the Willow Creek hills west of Paso Robles and started moving earth for a different reason, planting vines. What grew out of that ground became one of the most quietly acclaimed estates in California.
From trenching machines to a barley field
Ron Denner made his name in the Ditch Witch business before wine ever entered the picture. He bought his Paso Robles land in 1997 and began planting vineyards in the Willow Creek District in 1999, converting old barley fields into rows of Rhone and Bordeaux grapes. In 2005, after several years developing the site, he built a state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery on Vineyard Drive, the kind of facility that lets fruit and wine move gently by gravity rather than by pump.
The wines quickly outran the modest origin story. Under longtime winemaker Anthony Yount, Denner became known for opulent, precise reds that drew serious critical acclaim, with the flagship Dirt Worshipper Syrah twice earning a place on Wine Spectator Top 100 list. In 2022 the E and J Gallo family acquired Denner for its luxury portfolio, with Ron and his team staying involved. Anthony Yount now consults alongside head winemaker Mark Williams, keeping the style intact.
Denner flagship Syrah, the Dirt Worshipper, has landed on Wine Spectator Top 100 list twice, from a vineyard that began as a barley field.

Start the quizWillow Creek, farmed with care
Denner sits in the heart of the Willow Creek District, on the calcareous limestone soils that define the Paso west side. That chalky, fast-draining ground drives roots deep and keeps berries small and concentrated, while the Templeton Gap pulls cool Pacific air inland each afternoon, dropping the temperature into the cold range overnight. The grapes ripen fully but hold their acidity, which is what gives the wines their lift under all that power.
The farming matches the place. Denner leans on dry-farming and organic practices in the vineyard and a non-interventionist hand in the cellar, the gravity-flow winery letting the wine come together with minimal handling. The aim is to let the limestone and the climate speak rather than to stamp the wines with technique.
Opulent Rhone, polished Bordeaux
Denner is best known for its Rhone bottlings, led by the Dirt Worshipper, a dark, brooding estate Syrah that is the calling card of the house. Around it sit Rhone blends and Grenache and Mourvedre bottlings, plus Bordeaux-variety wines and a much-loved estate Viognier, most priced in the fifty to eighty dollar range and consistently well reviewed.
The style is rich and thrilling but not heavy-handed. The Dirt Worshipper shows blackberry, cracked pepper, smoked meat, and a deep mineral core; the Grenache-based wines lean brighter and red-fruited; the Viognier is fragrant and textured. Across the lineup the through-line is balance, generous Paso fruit held in check by cool-night freshness and limestone spine.

A Syrah like the Dirt Worshipper is built for dark, savory, fatty food. Its firm tannins bind to protein and fat, so a peppercorn-crusted ribeye, grilled lamb, or braised short ribs will turn the wine plush while the meat tastes cleaner. That is real chemistry, and it is why big Syrah and grilled red meat is a classic for a reason. Lean white fish is the wrong call here, with nothing for the tannins to grab.
The Grenache-led wines are more flexible, happy with grilled chicken, pork tenderloin, or a herb-rubbed leg of lamb, while the aromatic Viognier loves roast chicken, pork, or a creamy, mildly spiced dish. And in Paso, the local pairing always works, red-oak tri-tip beside a glass of estate Syrah. For a match to whatever you are cooking, try our wine pairing generator.
