Seghesio is one of Sonoma County’s great zinfandel houses and one of its oldest continuous winegrowing families. The story runs back to 1895 and the vines an Italian immigrant put in the ground that his descendants still farm today.

From Piedmont to Sonoma

Edoardo Seghesio left his family’s vineyards in Piedmont, Italy, in 1886 and, like so many immigrants of his generation, was drawn to northern Sonoma County and the Italian Swiss Colony, where he could follow his passion for winemaking. He married Angela Vasconi in 1893.

In 1895 the couple bought a modest home in northern Alexander Valley, really for the fifty-six acres of vineyard land around it, and planted the Home Ranch to zinfandel, the grape that became the family’s lifeline.

The Home Ranch and its old vines

Seghesio still farms a number of the original founding blocks of zinfandel from that 1895 planting. These old, head-trained vines give the depth and spice that define the house style, more than a hundred and twenty years and five generations on.

Zinfandel and the Italian thread

The winery is best known for zinfandel, from its widely poured Sonoma County bottling to old-vine and single-vineyard wines such as Home Ranch and Cortina. It also keeps its Piedmontese heritage alive with Italian varietals like sangiovese and arneis, a quiet nod to where the family began.

A Healdsburg landmark

The tasting room sits at 700 Grove Street in Healdsburg, at the gateway to Dry Creek Valley, with an outdoor lawn and lounge known as The Grove. The family sold the winery to Crimson Wine Group in 2011, but the name, the founding vineyards, and the zinfandel tradition carry on.
